The Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum says poverty remains the direct cause of insurgency in the North East region.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Barewa Old Boys’ Association (BOBA) at the Government House in Maiduguri, on Friday, Zulum stressed that there were direct links between poverty, criminality, and the insurgency.

According to him, a good leadership was a panacea to the Boko Haram insurgency.

Hundreds of thousands had been killed and over two million others displaced in the Boko Haram insurgency which started in Borno State in 2009.

The governor said: “For we the leaders, there is the need to do the needful, create the enabling environment for people to find their means of livelihood. The nexus between peace, security, and development should not be over-emphasized, if there is no peace, no development.

“The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has clearly spelt out that security is under the control of the Federal Government but that does not mean that the state governments are not important, but they also played a critical role in the situation within the state.

“Once there is no good leadership, nothing can be achieved. As leaders, we need to ensure discipline and accountability and above all monitoring and evaluation.”

The narrative of poverty causing crime needs to be debunked. Crime rates do go down as poverty decreases. Other factors like culture, parenting, and law enforcement play roles in poverty rates. This relationship can be examined by simply studying states with high crime and poverty rates and then juxtaposing it with demographic data. Who are the people committing these crimes and see what else they have in common?

So what is the cause of poverty itselfñ

Since the insurgency has started, haven't the poor guyz have made enough from the poor society?

Poverty is not the only cause of insurgency in the north. Religion and bad/poor parenting are the major cause of insurgencies in the north.

Religion + feudalistic elites = continuous mass poverty in the north.

When the people keep sprouting children like a broken pipe that is connected to a large tank filled with water, there is bound to be poverty.

You can't feed a family of 12 with budget that can barely feed a family of 5. Impossible!!! Papa must look for other source of income - kidnapping, armed robbery etc.

Even though the elites are happy with the situation, there's a need to educate your people on the importance of giving birth to what they can cater for.

Educate the people and you’re fighting the religious and ethnic crisis in the region

You can’t fight poverty or educate the people when there’s corruption and high cost of governance. There’s nothing left for the people if most of it is used for governance

This makes more sense. How people honestly believe you become a murder, rapist, terrorist because of poverty is amazing. Poverty exist all over the country yet you don't see other people going into terrorism.
