Where I come from, the child the woman had with another man belongs to her family and bears her father's name. When she is getting married, both families agree on what is traditionally acceptable, bride price et al and she bears her husband's name while the child, her father's name.

If you give woman belle, traditionally it is expected you show up with your relatives to see her family to let them know your intentions. If you say you have no intention of marriage but prefer being a baby daddy, the child becomes that of the lady's family and bears the grandfather's name even if the mother of the child is collecting money by the side from the biological father.

In some communities, the child becomes the child of whoever pays the woman's bride price.
