Uncertainty After Retirement Is Fuelling Corruption In Civil Service - Goodluck Jonathan

Nigeria's former president, Goodluck Jonathan has blamed the corruption in Nigeria's civil service on uncertainty in the welfare of public officeholders, IGBERETV reports.

Speaking at the book launch of the former Chaplain of the Aso Rock Villa Chapel, Obioma Onwuzurumba, on Tuesday December 6, Jonathan rued the lack of care for civil servants.

Speaking further, he said that civil servants are not allowed to own businesses, and are still not taken care of after retiring from service.

But he also had opportunities to rectify such deficiencies in the Civil service, but did not.

As a civil servant in Nigeria, you're totally OYO if you refuse to plan yourself for retirement.

The genesis of corruption in the country is the civil servant coz most times they are the ones graduating to become a politician after they have accumulated corrupt money to buy forms and spend on elections.

It actually africa stupid mentality but is very worse in Nigeria.

ASIWAJU IS HERE TO TAKE THE BULL BY ON HORN.

GOD BLESS THE INCOMING PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU.

Very true!
Absolute integrity is a big ask from a person who put 35 years (or more) of their life into serving an employer (government in this case) without being able to run a proper business while at it, only to end up with peanut as gratuities and pension.

We're breeding a system that inspires corrupt practices.

It's so sad our senior citizens after serving meritoriously almost always end up becoming beggars. This should be addressed ASAP.

Corruption in civil service is cos there's massive corruption from top to bottom.
Everyone wanna cash out since their president, governors, ministers, senators, reps, commissioners are all stealing.
You guys ll be shocked when more revelations come out of the nPower. From the president to the minister of humanitarian affairs to the officials. Everybody iyaf cash out!
What's the crime of the president, he doesn't vet projects thoroughly hence allowing appointees to run things anyhow. That's why the economy is looking like kwashiokor!

Baba is on point. For example, In Ikpeazu lead Abia state, senior citizens are nothing but third class rated persons. First class citizens are his political crew, second class citizens are the working civil servants who get paid at intervals then you get the senior citizens and others. It is a shame these kind of things happen without checks. In such conditions, who wouldn't want to steal or get bribed while in service??

Let's just look into the future and stop dwelling on what's past. He's got no power to change that now so it's not worth discussing.

.

First step towards the solution is to elect a President with zero tolerance for corruption to occupy the highest office in the Civil Service.

Now purge yourself of Tribal & Party Sentiments and tell me who, among the 3 top contenders is best suited for this.
The answer is as clear as daylight. cool

I still do not agree that civil servants should allowed to own businesses but I think their retirement benefits need to be enhanced to be in tune with current economic realities undecided

Very correct!

I know of a man who was retired some months ago.... His friend who was retired a year ago before him called to plead for financial assistance of even N1,000.

He sent it to the man and was letting me know of the situation, that if someone who after a year has not been paid, he wonders when he will be paid his gratuity by the Federal Government.

Meanwhile, our politicians are paid for ending their tenure and for begin another tenure in the National Assembly.... Huge sums!

True that...pensions are not stable.

Naturally, a big reason why is because Nigeria as a whole does not pay enough tax. In 'sane' countries, tax income is used to fund pensions (which is why Canada is taking in a lot of immigrants...they need young workers to pay tax to fund the aged people's pensions...can't do that with such a small populaiton of less than 30m despite the immigration )

Something for the next government to focus on. Pension reform in 2004 was a good thing...but it wasn't enough.

True talk

Jonathan crossed from Civil service to Politics and he knows what he is saying

Solutions

1:Contributory Pension Scheme handled by top Fund Managers

2: Mortgage loan of atleast 15years immediately after recruitment, so that a civil servants doesn't have to spend on house rent and still pay huge some to build house

3: Car Loan for a locally assembled Peugeot, Kia, Nissan or other durable brand with atleast 5 years repayment plan upon appointment
