It's an alien concept to me, though may appear pretty normal to others.

I have certainly never seen it before. I guess marriage means different things to us, I would certainly feel stupid getting all dressed up for my engagement only to sit next to a cut out or worse a strange man!

As I've explained previously, its the new normal for Nigerian diasporans but not for those based in Nigeria grin

^Not sure what you mean by new since this is an old custom in nigeria.

Some people have never heard of it probably because they're not very connected to the culture.

Or maybe it is not a common occurrence in their culture. I am Yoruba and even though I do not know everything about my culture, I know that I have never seen someone get married while their spouse is absent. I only very recently even heard of it.

I agree. If one spouse is going to be absent in this age, then I think the other should be too. Then it could be a family party for the wedding and not a traditional wedding.

^My grandma never set eyes on my grandpa before she was fedexed to him, and this was donkey years ago.

In addition, i'm well aware of more recent ones.

Ask around in your family- i'm sure someone has done that at some point in time.

Its fairly common in nigeria and not exclusively linked to one tribe.

I'd never heard of it, till Nairaland. And all the years I spent in Nigeria, I never heard of anyone getting married to a cardboard cut-out. I think it's bizarre.
