DETERMINED to instill discipline and stem crime, the Imo State government yesterday banned the use of handsets by all primary and secondary school children in the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Adaobi Obasi disclosed this while speaking with some journalists at the state- owned Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), Owerri.

“Government will ensure the enforcement of the ban to the letter,” she said, warning parents, teachers and guardians to take note of the ban.

According to her, the state government has screened 2,235 persons involved in the controversial 10,000 jobs offered by the immediate past government of Chief Ikedi Ohakim, adding that 750 have been certified to be employed soon in the education sector.

Prof. Obasi said the state government has approved the construction of classroom blocks in each of the 305 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wards spread in the 27 local councils of the state, stating that they would be completed within 18 months.

She urged parents who withdrew their children from school for lack of funds to return them to the schools as the state government has long introduced free education in public primary and secondary schools.
