Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, is not an Igbo candidate, according to the South-East council of traditional rulers, despite receiving support from his home region in the South-East. They claimed that the South-East never met and selected Peter Obi to run for president on its behalf. When Peter Obi visited the traditional leaders, Lawrence Agubuzu, the council's chairman, said this.
Agubuzu advised Nigerians to choose their candidates based on their qualifications and not on the basis of their tribe, religion, or ethnicity in an article published by The Cable on Saturday.
Agubuzu also asked Nigerians to reject sentiments and choose leaders who can end the nation's poverty, unemployment, corruption, injustice, and insecurity.
He asserted that Peter Obi's track record has been attested to by the traditional leaders in the South-East who watched him grow up, attend school, and hold numerous jobs.
He stated: "They are aware that Mr. Peter Obi was not selected and presented as a presidential candidate by the South-East at any level or in any forum. However, they, our subjects, are overjoyed and, in fact, a part of the praise and jubilation with which the majority of Nigerians welcomed the thrilling news of Obi's selection and nomination as the Labour Party's presidential candidate."
