Gunmen in the early hour of Sunday invaded some communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State and killed an elected councillor, Saleh Alawa leaving several others with various degrees of injuries.

The invaders numbering about a hundred, riding motorcycles with two occupants each according to a source from the area had entered the community through the neighbouring Munya Local Government Area shooting sporadically into the air to scare away possible intruders.

Eye witness account told our correspondent that the Councillor who was on his way to his village in Alawa rammed into the armed men around Zumba road where he was killed.

Though his Personal Assistant escaped the attack, the source said youths from surrounding communities quickly mobilized in their numbers in defence of their domain.

They went in search of the criminals and out of anger apprehended an informant at Gwada town and subsequently handed him over to the police for more investigation and possible prosecution if found guilty.

Worried by the incessant attacks and bloodletting by the armed men, youths in the area resolved to rise to the challenge of embarking on a vigorous search for the intruders as part of efforts to support security agencies arrest the culprits and restore peace and normalcy in the affected communities.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger State Command, DSP Wasiu A Abiodun could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

But the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr Emmanuel Umar confirmed the attack, saying efforts were ongoing to apprehend the criminals.
