Ovia, Otteh, Otedola Join Economic Team President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday further expanded the membership of the National Economic Management Team (NEMT) with the inclusion of the Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mrs. Arunma Otteh; former Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Mr. Jim Oviah; and businessman, Femi Otedola. President Jonathan also unveiled a roadmap to attain food security and generate nearly 3.5 million jobs by 2015. Briefing State House correspondents after a meeting that spanned nearly four hours, the Coordinating Minister of the Economic Team and Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; with Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Akinwunmi Adesina; businessman Aliko Dangote; and the Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, said the country would aim at improving food production both for local consumption and export from 43.745 million tonnes to 728.4 million tonnes. Out of the total production, 20 million is expected to be for local consumption while it will also aim at reaching 20 million farmers with fertiliser and improved seedlings as against the current rate of 550,000 which aggregates to less than 11 per cent. Tagged “Agricultural Transformation Action Plan for Nigeria”, the team said it was aimed at creating wealth and jobs for Nigerians as well as diversify the economy from an oil dependent one to a broader-based and multi-sectoral economy whereby it would be investment as against development driven. Okonjo-Iweala, who handed over to the Minister of Agriculture, Adesina, who explained that the period would see Nigeria concentrating on food production in areas of comparative advantage instead of the current system where the country imports what it could produce, it would aim at self-sufficiency and export under an environment of investment, partnership and accountability. Adesina said the country currently spends N356 billion on rice importation which was not acceptable politically and economically and aims at achieving combined production of paddy and high quality processed rice of 9.9 million metric tonnes local production by 2015. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ovia-otteh-otedola-join-economic-team/98135/ |

Guys , make una mark my words. This is the beginning of the move to ease Sanusi Lamido Sanusi out. How is he supposed to work with Ovia given their history? Sanusi directly targeted Ovia as one of those who had to go for the betterment of the Nigerian banking sector . GEJ may feel the North will be furious if he sacked Sanusi outrightly . The next option is to frustrate Sanusi to leave. They are relying on Sanusi's proud and outspoken disposition to get the better of him. |

woetooam4j: Will Sanusi , as CBN Governor , not naturally be in any NEMT (National economic management team) ? Would it not be a personal insult to you if you are forced to work with an employee you singled out for dismissal because you were convinced he was stealing from your Company? |

Gbawe: I think you are getting it all wrong. Sanusi isnt part of the NEMT to my knowledge and he doesnt really have to be. Its like assuming that because Dangote and Otedola are part of the NEMT, then Adenuga would be part of it automatically. This is a specially created committee with little or no constitutional backing. The role of Sanusi as the CBN governor has the backing of the constitution. As long as he does his job there and Ovie doesnt stroll to the CBN at odd times, I see no problem. These are adults and I expect them to act like adults. |
Re: Ovia, Otteh And Otedola Join GEJ Economic Team by Gbawe: 9:28pm On Sep 09, 2011 |
woetooam4j: Any National economic management team should mandatorily include the CBN Governor . In fact , it makes no sense he is excluded because he has the fiscal statistics, core knowledge of present and planned CBN policies plus specialist monetary policy knowledge to bring balance to the technocratic suggestions of others. Let us not forget that Soludo was an important member of the OBJ economic management team (EMT) . Leaving Sanusi out makes no sense as he , perhaps more than others, as the 'wallet', can shed light on what is feasible or not. This is a specially created committee with little or no constitutional backing. The role of Sanusi as the CBN governor has the backing of the constitution. As long as he does his job there and Ovie doesnt stroll to the CBN at odd times, I see no problem. These are adults and I expect them to act like adults. It is not about behaving as adults. Sanusi targeted Elumelu, Ovia, Ibru, Akingbola et al because he believed they were financially toxic (ala economic 'hitmen) and ruinously Oligarchic . If Sanusi had his ways they would all be in jail. He cannot then be expected to thrash out economic policies with Ovia. It is a matter of Principles. Anyway , lets see how things play out. |

in theory the CBN governor should be politically neutral and not be a member of politically constituted body though he may provide input( IN THEORY) |

Chyz*: Of course he is !!! It is like a football team without a Coach. Certainly the team can go out to play without a coach but that is highly abnormal and undesirable because it is the coach that should formulates the tactics to win . On the sideline , he can analyze what is going wrong and introduce effective tactical changes. |
Re: Ovia, Otteh And Otedola Join GEJ Economic Team by iwonbaoko1: 9:31am On Sep 10, 2011 |
the main trouble is sanusi forgets he is not politician so he needs to speak little. if he is so interested in social/political engineering he should join a political party |
Re: Ovia, Otteh And Otedola Join GEJ Economic Team by Gbawe: 10:08am On Sep 10, 2011 |
iwonbaoko1: The national economic management team is not a political gathering . It is a group specifically tasked with finding ways to improve the economy of Nigeria. Sanusi, or any CBN Governor of the day, must thus be included . His inclusion is fundamentally required. |
Re: Ovia, Otteh And Otedola Join GEJ Economic Team by iwonbaoko1: 10:20am On Sep 10, 2011 |
gbawe please calm down exactly what is "POLITICAL GATHERING" i am not sure what that is. politicians are elected into office with a mandate and on a manifesto and so have a wider remit and responsibilty. they are able to take credit(and blame) for a lot more than a bureaucrat. i make a distinction between the occupiers of political offices and bureaucrats whose role is to be neutral whereas government may have an ideological position on policies bureaucrats are(in theory) supposed to be neutral. nigeria's democracy is young and these distinctions may appear academic but they are quite important. the NEMT is not a statutory body. it is a creation of the incumbent and as such it is politically constituted. membership is not transparent or open and they serve at the pleasure of the president. that is a political body. my exact words; "POLITICALLY CONSTITUTED" which i chose deliberately. are quite accurate it is important that not everything political is partisan. their objective is to deliver on political/manifesto promises. |

How on earth can you gather monopolists and lobbyists and make them part of a team to formulate national policy on the economy. As usual the rationale will be that their ability to build huge billion naira businesses makes them suitablw for the job, nonsense! I can't imagine richard branson being made a member of any economic policy team for the simple reason that he will naturally safeguard his interests. Isn't anyone thinking at all |
Re: Ovia, Otteh And Otedola Join GEJ Economic Team by Gbawe: 10:55am On Sep 10, 2011 |
odogwu-x: Indeed and this is what Sanusi , given what we know of him, will be wondering with the inclusion of the likes of Ovia, Otedola, Dangote et al. Sanusi, most likely, may be inclined radically towards social pro-people policies that will benefit ordinary Nigerians. He will surely , [b]sooner or later, have a problem with those who are oligarchic, elitist and monopolistic in Nature because , naturally, those folks will propagate ideas that abets their interests. Personally , I see Otedola, Dangote, Ovia et al as Vulture-like capitalists with no social conscience or dedication to Nation building much like how Oligarchs of Russia , who accumulated billions with the help of Government, think nothing of buying a flat in Central London for £103 Million and then spending £200 million to 'do up' the flat . I wonder when they will invite Adenuga to join the 'Party'. Given the oligarchic society that has arisen, with a few Nigerians filthy rich via partisan Government assistance, our policies , naturally, should seek to redress the balance via leaning towards socio-capitalism. We won't get that, IMO, with this team. That is what Sanusi will have a problem with. |

Gbawe: i see no evidence that dangote is like that. i am aware of many inititaives that he has to encourage human capital development not just in nigeria but across africa. i see no evidence of self indulgent luxury/opulence. no doubt he has had an unfair advantage in nigeria but there have been many others who have had the same and achieved little. he is investing mainly in africa and has build a huge conglomerate portfolio that is listed in several countries and so more likely to survive his demise. i hve no doubt that he is on rack to become the richest mn in the world given the opportunities in africa and his willingness to take risks. £300 million on a london flat?? guy cool down |

iwonbaoko1: My guy , I know the UK Property Market very well . Trust me when I say the Russians, along with the Middle East crew, are some of the craziest spenders. like our lot in Nigeria, they did not work hard for their money so very easy to spend it ultra garishly. Even as the example I give was only satirical , reality is not much different. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertynews/8456089/UKs-most-expensive-flat-sold-for-135.4-million.html UK's most expensive flat sold for £135.4 million |
