A family business is a business incorporated by MD and the wife is the deputy managing director, the daughter the customer care service representative and the son the operations manager.

What's your experience like?
Was it worth it?

It started great. I started in the customer service department, and after a while, I was tasked with managing that and also supervising a unit of the operations team. It was supposed to be some sort of promotion for the good work done so far

And that was where the wahala started. About a year later, I submitted a notice of resignation, and left after two weeks.

I dey find work now Sha lol. I am a graduate of Communications, and I have years of work experience in customer service/relations and logistics and transportation.

I once did…

It was crazy at a point because oga who was MD would come and give a different instruction from what madam who was in charge of financial arrangements and company logistics had given.

It was really crazy because at times I could feel the tension in the air and would be confused on whose instructions to follow.

I learned a lot from there though. How to play people without their knowledge.

No be me them go put for middle!

Family business can be a nice place ONLY if a proper structure is in place. I've worked in one, though not heavily concentrated with close-knit family members.

The reason a lot of Nigerians dread working for family business in Nigeria, and rightfully so is that; there's no structure in place, many take delight in being wicked, it's filled with nepotism and tribalism, and finally struggling to survive.

I mean even if you're just starting and struggling financially as a company, try and provide a blueprint and structure in place no matter how little. The reasons stated in the previous paragraph is why most family-run companies don't survive. Whereas they are part of the building blocks of a stable in other climes. Examples are; Cargill in the US, Burnbrae in Canada, Samsung In South Korea among others.

Small scale family businesses/cottage industries actually contribute to the stability of the economy of a country and should be encouraged

It's funny to read comments of people that are horrible employees trying to sound like angels.
If its such a horrible place to work, nobody forced you to remain employed there.

And if it was an easy task to own a family business, why didn't your mum and dad own one and employed you there?

Please let's stop these one-sided conversations that don't add value but merely serve as avenues for people to feed their narcissistic thirst online.

Are there businesses that are horrible to work in? Yes. Tons of them, but who held a gun to your head to remain there?

Lol...I just left one. Now I am jobless.
The MD is quite a generous and responsible fellow and seems to know what he wants for his business. But you see the GM, who is the jnr brother... he sells most company assets at every opportunity, collects return from staff on any assigned duty that money allocation is involved. The worst of it all is that when there is an eventual problem and maybe the MD intervene, he will blindly deny having anything to do with you.

Ofcourse, no one is bold enough to tell the MD what his brother has been upto. I wanted to detail all he has been doing in my resignation letter, but I'm sure my letter will not get to the MD. So what's the need...

I left the very toxic environment. I am only scared of the GM ruining that company bit by bit at the expense of his elder brother(MD) hard-working tenacity

Yea.. handled a part of my dad's business immediately after school. Although I was in a lot of money some idiots who wanted favour were spying on me and casting my business inside his business. I was full of energy, I made sure the whole thing ran smoothly and I was actually making triple returns weekly than the previous manager. Bursting the target set, running the drivers and ensuring all the trucks were in good shape without asking him for a dime. On top of it I triple quadrupled the clientele base... Even took it interstate. But old man no still let me breath.
Most times he just overides my decision with his authority making me look stupid before some clients who were due to be served, rather he would make me serve some others because they're his friends of friends. I work with money and booking on a first come first serve basis but then pops go just call from house and give instructions which I can't overlook.
It got to a point I couldn't take it anymore and I just quit cos it was even causing a strain on my relationship with him. The moment I left that part of his business crumbled due to poor management. If only he would allow me free reign. Family business sweet sha but it has its downsides. I'm not cut out for that.
