Another war at the horizon . Maybe the gods of War want to switch from Ukraine to South America as Russia is about to bring the Ukrainian conflict to a closure.

UK disappointed as Argentina withdraws from Falklands pact

Issued on: February 02 , 2023

London (AFP) – The UK government on Thursday insisted the Falkland Islands remained British as Argentina walked away from a cooperation pact and demanded new talks over their sovereignty.

Known as the Malvinas in Spanish, the UK-ruled islands were the subject of a short but brutal war after Argentina invaded in 1982. Britain drove out the invading force after dispatching a naval armada.

In 2016, the two sides agreed to disagree about sovereignty, but to cooperate on issues such as energy, shipping and fishing, and on identifying the remains of unknown Argentine soldiers killed in battle.

But at G20 talks in New Delhi, Argentinian Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero informed UK counterpart James Cleverly that his government was abandoning the pact.

In a series of tweets, he renewed Argentina's longstanding demands instead for negotiations about sovereignty of the islands at the UN in New York.

"The Falkland Islands are British," Cleverly retorted on Twitter over Cafiero's thread.

"Islanders have the right to decide their own future -- they have chosen to remain a self-governing UK Overseas Territory," he added.

The decision was announced just as Britain's minister for the Americas, David Rutley, was visiting Buenos Aires for what he called "productive" meetings.

"Argentina has chosen to step away from an agreement that has brought comfort to the families of those who died in the 1982 conflict," Rutley tweeted, calling the decision "disappointing".

Margaret thatcher and Queen Elizabeth were the ones who took the Falklands from Argentina by force, now that both of them are dead it's time for Argentina to reclaim what belongs to them.

You are wrong. It's not always been British. It was under Argentina control until 1832 when Britain forcefully took it from Argentina. Argentina resorted to war when Britain did not want to give up control of the Island it forcefully took from Argentina in the 19th century. You are the one that should research before posting nonsense.

Argentina has been on this Falklands issue for decades. They even fought a war over it but lost. The Argentines fought well while Britain secretly got support from US, Israel and France. The weird thing was that Argentina had stocked on and was fighting against the UK with weapons from those three countries. And those countries sabotaged the weapons.

For example, Argentina's French-made Exocet missiles kept hitting UK ships but were not exploding. Argentina later discovered that France remotely switched the missiles exploding mechanism off.

France denies this. But how can you explain over 30 missiles hitting ships and not exploding?

The UK has refused to discuss the status of the island ever since the war ended. They claim the people on the island want to be part of the UK.

In truth, the people on the island are from the UK. They migrated there after the UK chased Argentines off the island. So how will they not agree to be part of the UK?

The UK should do the right thing and return it to Argentina.

You are distorting history.

Falklands have been a territory of the British long before the birth of Thatcher and Elizabeth II.

The British have been administering it since about 1833. The citation you made is when the Argentinean military invaded the island by force and was repelled by the British task force in 1982.

Data collected from the indigenous people of Canada (they're not white people) reflects their will to assert thier sovereignty over thier territory (Canada).
The indigenous people of Canada are demanding that the illegal settlers/occupiers (and thier descendants) from Western Europe return back to thier continent and stop the exploitation of the natural resources of the indigenous people of Canada.
Unlike Nigeria, Britain colonized Canada and never left. They settled in and displaced the indigenous population to become the majority.
The indigenous people of Canada remains a subjugated demographic that experienced genocide and the survivors are still exposed to systematic genocide, culture eradication, poverty (which inadvertently leads to crime)
and govt induced homelessness etc.
They have no drinking water and they're over-represented in the criminal justice system despite being a minority.

PS: Although Nigeria's independence from colonization is only in theory (not in practice), the indigenous people of Nigeria are relatively in a better situation in comparison to thier Canadian counterpart.

I have no qualms with you but it'll be a disservice to society if statements that are intended to stoke confusion (such as the one you made) are allowed to anchor on a thread where Nairalanders who are unfamiliar with the subject being discussed are exposed to the risk of being misguided.
Your statement is motivated by malice laced in ignorance.
What he said was well received, understood and validated by historical evidence.

Who wrote this for Buhari? Buhari is not that intelligent.
If it's Tinubu now, I know he's capable of writing this.

Nigeria's Buhari Slams 'Unfair' International Debt Architecture

Struggling with their external debt burden is one of the burning issues for many African countries. Many believe that the problem is that certain countries cannot timely service their foreign debt due to the unfair terms stipulated by international financial organizations, which forces them to seek restructuring in the first place.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has castigated today's international financial organizations and their "unfair" debt architecture as favoring only advanced nations.
He aligned with the United Nations Secretary-General’s description on the global financial system as an "unfair debt architecture that not only charges poor countries much more money to borrow on the market than advanced economies, but downgrades them when they even think of restructuring their debt or applying for debt relief."

Speaking at the UN Conference of Least Developed Countries held in Doha, Qatar, Buhari called on developed and developing nations to offer duty-free and quota-free market access to the 46 countries mentioned on the UN least-developed countries (LDC) list; most of these countries are African ones.

In line with the UN rules concerning the LDCs, the countries listed should be granted such benefits as preferential market access, technical assistance, aid, and capacity-building on technology.
Buhari went on to shine the spotlight on the mounting debt burden shouldered by least-developed countries and emphasized the need to reform the international financial architecture so that poor countries become its priority.

Given these conditions, the Nigerian leader continued, the possibility for many countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals "remains bleak."
The head of state also said the development of poor countries is often impeded by challenges which are outside their hands and beyond their control, and this corroborates the need of countries for assistance in unlocking their economic potential.

Buhari made these statements as Nigeria struggles its foreign debt burden.
According to Finance Minister of Nigeria Zainab Ahmed, the western African country spent nearly 80% of its revenue on servicing its debt between January and November 2022, which amounted to $11.3 billion.
Besides Nigeria, there is a host of African countries grappling with the same problem

According to a 2022 report by the World Bank, more than half of low-income countries of which most are African, cannot meet their obligations on paying foreign debts.
One of the listed countries is Ghana, in Africa’s west, whose foreign debt amounts to 58% of its total $37.4 billion public debt as of October 2022. That said, the country has been trying to achieve its external debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework.
Along with Ghana, Zambia, in Africa’s south, is also pursuing debt restructuring, because the country is unable to pay its $13.04 billion external debt in a timely manner.

Earlier, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema lashed out at what he called "suicidal" interest rates comparing them to a "black mamba kiss of death".

Concerning the foreign debt trap problem, many African leaders have repeatedly urged African nations not to deal with international financial organizations due to "unfair" conditions.
For instance, touching upon the external loans of African nations in June 2022, Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo urged Africa to stop "begging" the West, emphasizing the key role of the African Development Bank and the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) concerning the continent's development.

"If we stop being beggars and spend African money inside the continent, Africa will not need to ask for respect from anyone, we will get the respect we deserve. If we make it prosperous as it should be, respect will follow," he noted.

ParasiteWest:
There cannot be a right government until the West is put in their place. The interest of the West in developing countries is to make sure the developing countries remain impoverished so the citizens of those countries would find migration to the West for 'greener pastures' attractive where they're then exploited and exposed to modern day slavery. Their intent is to keep the West as a 'paradise' in the minds of the manipulated public. The West influenced the politics of Africa directly/indirectly. The right govt will get the 'Gaddafi treatment'
