Atiku Abubakar has lashed out at Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

One might wonder “what could be the reason?” The reason is embedded in his promise to ensure credible governorship elections on March 11.

Angrily, Atiku described Professor Yakubu’s promise as “medicine given after death”. And he suggested that it was too late.

During the meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), Professor Yakubu promised to ensure the strict use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

Also, he said INEc will take disciplinary action against negligent staff. However, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, dismissed these assurances as worthless and unconvincing.

Also, Shaibu accused Professor Yakubu of attempting to save face after what he called the “worst elections” Nigeria had ever witnessed since independence.

Bitterly, he urged the INEC chairman not to deceive Nigerians again after the disorganized performance of INEC in the Presidential poll.

Meanwhile, Atiku’s statement reflects growing concerns about the credibility of the electoral process in Nigeria.

Many observers have criticized the handling of the February 25 poll, citing irregularities and logistical problems.

However, with the governorship elections just days away, the pressure is on INEC to deliver a more transparent and efficient process.

Apparently, Atiku’s statement suggests that many Nigerians remain skeptical about the commission’s ability to do so.
