'Against Deviations': Uganda's Parliament Passes Law Banning Identification as LGBTQ

Uganda is widely known for its strong anti-LGBTQ sentiment with same-sex relations being illegal in the East African country. The nation’'s President Yoweri Museweni is a long-time opponent of legitimizing the LGBTQ community, saying that homosexuality is not something that should be normalized or celebrated.

The Ugandan parliament has passed an anti-gay law that proposes new penalties for homosexual intercourse and criminalizes anyone identifying as LGBTQ. This move has come as the country's lawmakers argue that the current ban on same-sex relations is insufficient.
The 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Bill was introduced by Asuman Basalirwa, a member of parliament, at the beginning of this month. According to the lawmaker, the purpose of the bill is to protect the culture, religious and family values of the Ugandan people "from acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country."

“The objective of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, our faiths, by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex,” Basalirwa said.

Apart from expanding on the criminalization of same-sex intercourse, the act bans promoting and abetting homosexuality, as well conspiring to engage in same-sex relations, prescribing jail terms of up to 5 years.
It also criminilazes those who "hold out as a lesbian, gay, transgender, a queer, or any other sexual or gender identity that is contrary to the binary categories of male and female," with a punishment of up to ten years in prison. The same penalty could be invoked against anyone, who engages in "same-sex activity." According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), if the bill comes into effect, it will be the first to outlaw identifying as LGBTQ.

Moreover, violations under the law specify capital punishment for "aggravated homosexuality," which among other things applies in cases of sexual relations involving those infected with HIV and underage minors.
The legislation was passed by the parliament on Tuesday, after a roll call ordered by the House speaker. It was supported by the overwhelming majority of legislators. (this makes me very proud as an African) Following the vote, the bill will now be presented to the president, who may choose to sign it into law or use his veto.

In his recent speech, President Museveni accused Western nations of "trying to impose their practices on other people," saying that Uganda won't follow "people who are lost," referring to West's tendency to normalize homosexuality.
"The homosexuals are deviations from normal. Why? Is it by nature or nurture? We need to answer these questions,"
President Museveni was quoted as saying by media. I've come across multiple homosexuals in Canada(at work, at school etc)...none of them are ok mentally (although, a lot of people in Canada who aren't LGBTQ are afflicted with debilitating mental diseases...including those in govt circles)...I agree with the notion that homosexuality is a mental disease.

HRW called the bill a "more egregious version" of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2014, which stipulated that "aggravated homosexuality" should be punishable by life imprisonment, but was ruled invalid by a court on procedural grounds.
The reintroduction of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill comes after several months of debates over the LGBTQ issue, which has been revived following scandals over reported cases of recruiting youth in homosexual pornography, thereby re-igniting calls from public figures for criminalizing homosexuality

At least, an African country is protecting our culture and traditions from the disease/mental illness that has afflicted the West.

US Threatens Uganda With Economic Response for Criminalizing Homosexuality grin grin grin

Uganda is on the verge of prohibiting any kind of homosexual activities in the country, including punishing those who identify themselves as gay. The country's authorities say the law will protect cultural, religious and family values.

Washington has threatened Uganda with economic "repercussions," if the African country passes a new bill concerning legal accountability for homosexual activities.
"We would have to take a look at whether or not there might be repercussions that we would have to take, perhaps in an economic way, should this law actually get passed – enacted," John Kirby, National Security Council spokesman, said during a press briefing this week.

The 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Bill that was recently discussed by the Ugandan parliament would introduce punishment for people who identify themselves as gay, including capital punishment in specific cases. Such cases, for instance, include sexual relations involving those infected with HIV and underage minors.
The next step for the bill to become a law is the president’s approval.

Initially, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill was proposed by Asuman Basalirwa, a member of the country’s parliament, earlier this month.
According to the lawmaker, the bill purports to protect cultural, religious and family values of the Ugandan people "from acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country."

"The objective of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, our faiths, by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex," Basalirwa said.

In his recent speech, President Museveni accused Western nations of "trying to impose their practices on other people," emphasizing that his nation won't follow "people who are lost," citing Western countries’ tendency towards normalizing homosexuality.
"The homosexuals are deviations from normal. Why? Is it by nature or nurture? We need to answer these questions," President Museveni said, as cited by media.

death penalty for homosexuality is a good idea, rehabilitation is unnecessary(it's an eternal affliction that can only be redeemed by death...no second chances).... It's alien to our culture, religions, traditions and values.

"Homosexuality is a criminal offence in both the civil and shari'a law. The two most common religions in Nigeria, Islam and Christianity, as well as the traditions of the people forbids homosexuality."

Nigeria should be like Saudi Arabia where
"the KSA provides native Saudis with more than adequate welfare benefits, removing the need to live and work in other developed countries.

There are a variety of reasons why so few Saudi Arabians chose to permanently live to the United States. Among these were the wealth of Saudi Arabia, the religious faith and pride of Saudis who found it difficult to maintain an Islamic lifestyle in the United States, and a lack of factors motivating citizens to leave Saudi Arabia. The limited number of marriages between the US and Saudi citizens may also have contributed to the low number of Saudi immigrants and of Saudi American" Wikipedia...

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni declined on Thursday to sign the country’s anti-homosexuality bill into law, instead returning it to parliament for revision to ensure it does not “frighten” people who need “rehabilitation.”
“Since we have agreed now, I’m going to return that bill, and you quickly deal with those issues and we sign it,” Museveni said, promising to meet with the Ugandan parliament’s Legal Committee and other parties in the coming week to finalize the measures.

The president encouraged legislators to show “patriotism” by opposing homosexuality and preparing for the potential impact of aid cuts to Uganda, which are reportedly threatened by LGBTQ advocates.
