Emeskhalifa: If every states have the kind of resources at Lagos' disposal they'll also work (with enough to also loot). Check Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kano and Kaduna with equally sizable financial chest. |

Comelysync: It's not a design flaw. People do not understand that there are different kinds of maintenance. The section of Third Mainland Bridge from Lagos Island to Ebute Metta was opened in 1980. The section of the bridge from Ebute Metta to Oworonshoki was opened in 1990. Third Mainland Bridge is made up of concrete slabs that are connected by expansion joints. Those expansion joints are meant to be maintained regularly. In the mid-2000s it was reported that the expansion joints, particularly the joint at the Adeniji Adele end, were in a bad shape. In fact, there was panic that the bridge was going to collapse. The Government said that the bridge was not going to collapse (mainly so that people would not be afraid). From 1980 till the mid-2000s is around 25 years and the expansion joints had not been maintained at all during that period. The expansion joints were replaced (for the first time since 1980) in 2008. The bridge was closed for 4 months so that the work could be carried out. Traffic is usually diverted to a single carriageway while the old joints are being removed and then vehicles are completely blocked from the bridge so that the new joints can be put in place (there must be no vibration on the bridge at that time). The second phase of the work was done in 2012. Babatunde Fashola was Lagos State Governor when the project was carried out by the Federal Government in 2008 and 2012 and he became minister of works in 2015. He said that he discovered that it wasn't all the expansion joints that were replaced. It was only the worst ones (between Lagos Island and Ebute Metta). The bridge was shut for 3 days in 2018 for investigation and the remaining expansion joints were replaced in 2020, when the bridge was closed for months. I know how important the expansion joint is because I remember what happened to the Onikan Flyover in the 1990s (it split into 2) Confusion of Lagosians Now note, I said that the bridge was closed to replace the expansion joints. Some people thought that it was closed for resurface and they complained (when it was reopened) that the surface was not smooth. What is being done tomorrow is merely resurfacing. They are basically filling up the potholes and resurfacing the rough areas to make them smooth. The work is going to be carried out by the Lagos Public Works Corporation, an arm of the Lagos State Government (the repair work on the expansion joints was done by the Federal Government). Switruth: Good one keh? Are you staying in Lagos to know the impact? Which alternative roads will they refer one to? Eko bridge that is still under construction? Or Carter bridge which they are still constructing the bridge at Oyingbo? If you work in VI, how you go take reach office? The post is senseless. If they have the interest of Lagosians at heart, they should fix Eko bridge first. |
