Every course in the Nigerian university is subsidized, yes all of them.
Why single out medicine alone and not bar all graduates from traveling abroad
until 5 years after graduation?

There is what we called critical skills category, what a nation needs to survive; teachers, farmers, doctors, nurses are in this category.

Nigerian rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem has urged members of the National Assembly to pass a bill that prohibits politicians from seeking medical treatment abroad.

The 'Nigeria Jaga Jaga' crooner, via his Instagram page, was reacting to the House of Representatives' Brain Drain Bill To Regulate Nigerian Medics From Going Abroad.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson (APC- Oshodi/Isolo II Federal Constituency) has passed second reading.

The Bill seeks to prevent Nigerian-trained medical or dental practitioners from being granted full licences until they have worked for a minimum of five years in the country.

in saner climes, it cost alot for medical student to be trained ranging from about 150million - 200Million naira to become a doctor, this foreign doctors owe student debts their entire life. In nigeria it cost only about less than N500,000 in a public institution with no debts. This cheap education is subsidized by tax payers fund, only for this medical students to complete studing for close to free medical courses in nigeria, their next motive is travelling abroad. this is unfair to the scope of nation building, the stand of the HORs isnt perfect, but its a right step in a right direction for the long run.

The bill is dead on arrival and here is why,

1) There is a temporary provisional license with which you use to practice for 2yrs and do your housemanship before it expires after graduation. That license Is just to show ppl that you have the right to touch patients for a time period after graduation during which you must have complete your housemanship. Maybe that license will now be increased to 5yrs due to the bill but that will now make the stress to hurriedly look for housemanship slots easy, and make the graduates focus on getting UK qualifications first.. It is that graduation letter with IELTS and not the provisional license(or the permanent license gotten after housemanship), that is needed to be submitted to examining body in the UK to start the process of writing their exams. And once you pass the exams you must register under GMC within 2yrs with evidence of housemanship. The graduation certificate, your one year housemanship evidence(which you can now do after passing plab2), grin your IELTS and the pass of the two exams that are the Koko requirement to prove that indeed you are a doctor that can practice in UK unsupervised. grin grin grin grin

You only need evidence of your Naija full license or provisional license when you are applying for visa.

2) There is also no requirement for the full license to practice as a doctor after housemanship by the GMC in uk grin. Because once you have passed English test, plab 1 and 2 (even without housemanship for those who can afford to leave the country immediately after graduation and face UK), they can do their housemanship in the UK and get UK license directly with just their university certificate. That one is a bit more competitive but if you can get slot before you even apply or finish your housemanship here, you can just go to the UK straight as an fy1 grin grin grin grin grin grin

Now this is what will be happening, Alot of Nigerian doctors will make it a duty and goal to leave before that 5yrs expiration just to show the legislators that they can keep their permanent license cheesy cheesy cheesy

For those who choose to travel abroad, all expenses must be from the salaries.

That'll be inhumane. Any person should be able to source the best healthcare available.

AT mot all we can do is ensure that the government is not funding it.
