Without making excuses for anyone or any generation, I should mention that there is a deeper historical reason for this - and it rests with the fact that as a new nation just coming into its own, the younger generation formed the majority of the educated class at the time, while much older people were, more often than not, either illiterate or semi-literate.

Needless to say, as time went along and things evened out, that younger generation has grown into an educated and experienced older generation. That's the reason.

You are very right

But I wonder why a good number of 40 yrs old of this generation still sees themselves as youth. No motivation to become responsible adults

He was my dad's GOC then and I remember that painful plane crash- Donnier 228 Airforce plane from Markurdi Airforce Base. The wreckage was discovered by a young boy that eventually became a regular commissioned officer @ the NDA some 2 years ago. God rest their souls. Nice historic thread. Thanks @ naptu.

It's very clear that there is an ethnic bigotry necessary in chosen an ADC. The Nuts must be satisfied.

Don't put an Okoro as ADC.

They ALWAYS flee the battle field.

Zik, Ojukwu and Kanu all ran away at first gunshot. Even Peter obi ran from PDP primaries before it started.

Victor Banjo, a Yoruba man led the Biafra Army while Ojukwu was shivering in his wife's skirts.

Try and show that you are sensible when commenting and stop talking like someone who smoked dried cow dung. Banjo led a battalion of the Biafran Army and he himself retreated from the Battlefield at Ore and he was courtmartialed. There was a Biafran high command whom Banjo reported to. Stop being stupid abeg

When it got to his turn he decided to have an Igbo and a northerner as his ADC , this man must have been driven by something else and not patriotism.

He had a northerner as ADC please was it bad? Gowon went as far as making the composition of brigade of guards specifically from his Angas tribe

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, President, Head Of State And Commander In Chief Of The Armed Forces Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria.

ADC = Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Nigerian Army).

Colonel Dasuki was President Babangida's ADC from 1985 until his clash with General Abacha c1988. He later became the National Security Adviser during the Goodluck Jonathan era.

ADC = Colonel Usman Kakanda Bello (Nigerian Army).

Colonel U.K. Bello was killed during the April 22nd, 1990 coup.

ADC = Colonel Nuhu Bamalli

Colonel Nuhu Bamalli was the Principal Staff Officer to the President and became the President's ADC when Colonel Bello was killed. He was the commander of the Nigerian contingent of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in 2003. Major General Bamalli died in a plane crash that killed many senior military officers who were on their way to Obudu for the Chief Of Army Staff's conference in 2006. He was the GOC of the 2nd Division at the time.

If he had an all southern ADC or all igbo brigade of guards Nigeria would not have been through this shit , Nigeria would have been a super power. This is the mistake obi would have made

What do you say of Nnamdi Azikiwe? The man was too educated and cosmopolitan. Not even one ADC, out of the 3 he had, from his ethnic region. I think Azikiwe was a wonderful man. His though process was quite cosmopolita, alas Nigeria of today has failed those ideals. Today tribe comes first before even sense and reasoning.

My current landlord here in the UK is encouraging me to buy properties. He has spent over £10k on property investment training and is buying properties worth £1m this year. And he is explaining and teaching me these things for free. He is White. I am Nigerian. But he doesn't care. That's how life should be. We are humans before anything else.

It became generated from the name of a popular business man in 60s named Nurudeen Omotayo Alowonle.
A well known name in music industry then.

Beautiful thread.. Kudos OP. That was some serious research and digging. Even most history books of Nigerian military and politics did not do justice and give attention to ADCs like this thread you have done.
It's like I'm reading one of Max siolluns books again.

When people like you form 80% of the population, why wouldn't Nigeria be underdeveloped?

The main reason the coup against Ironsi succeeded was because at the height of tribalism in Nigeria, he filled the presidential guard with northerners to prove he wasn't tribal. The same guard commanders ensured the coup plotters arrested him.

Please, I need to be schooled about the functions roles of ADCs in security of their principals, besides ceremonial.
I think long years of military rule has really made our political leaders placed much premium on use of ADCs.

Admit Kanu too fled. And Peter Obi.

Yorubas haven't fought? Ask Ojukwu who Benjamin Adekunle was. Who flogged him?

Ask Ojukwu why Victor Banjo led the entire Biafuro Army while Ojukwu was shivering in his wife's skirts.

Have some shame nah cheesy
