The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Katsina, on Wednesday, nullified the election of two senators and eight House of Representatives members, all of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)in the state.

The affected senators are Abdu Umar Yandoma and Ahmed Sani Stores, representing Daura and Katsina senatorial districts in the state.

The eight House of Representatives members include Abdu Dankama (Jibia/Kaita); Murtala Isa (Faskari/Sabuwa/Kankara); Musa Salisu (Kankia/Kusada/Ngawa) and Aminu Ashiru (Mani/Bindawa).

Others are Muntari Dandutse (Funtua/Dandume); Umar Adamu Katsayal (Daura/Mai’adua/Sandamu); Mohammed Tukur (Katsina central), and Tasi’u Doguru (Mashi/Dutsi).

Giving its judgment, the chairman of the tribunal, Justice S. A. Akintaiye and Justice Halim Saleeman ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections within 90 days in the affected constituencies.

According to the tribunal, all the contestants were not qualified to contest based on the judgment of the Court of Appeal which set aside the January 15, 2011 CPC primary elections, which recognised them as party flag-bearers.

The tribunal stated that, it relied on section 141 of the Electoral Act 2011 as amended and section 135 of the 1999 Constitution that a candidate shall only contest election under the banner of a political party, to annul the election of the affected CPC candidates.
