If you ever been to Enugu you will know that the city of 4 million depends mostly and solely on tanker water supply from 9th Mile .

Bore holes and wells are not an option as there is a very deep shale bed very close to the surface that makes water percolation impossible seeing to no natural underground water reservoirs.

Even borehole drilling can't solve the problem because as you drill beyond the deep shale bed , you will encounter natural gas or coal. Where there is none of that, expect to see a dense layer of lead .

Open wells that dot the city landscape are nothing but subsurface flows during the rainy season and in high density areas, are heavily polluted from soakaway flows .

It's for this reason that Enugu depends on water tankers shipping water daily from 9th mile.
A 4,000 gallon water tank cost as much as 6k during the rainy season and as high as 9k in the rainy season. A 25lite Jerry can of water cost as much as #200.

Every major hotel in that city owns a personal water tanker or two.

Other than in some parts of the old city layout were tap water supply is sclerotic, all other suburbs and slums depend on water tankers.

Now imagine the monthly cost for just water for a family .

Enugu is one city in the south were water borne disease is rife. I caught cholera once just eating in a restaurant when I went there briefly for business.

It really baffled me how such a very well laid out and planned city (after Abuja, Enugu is the most well planned city in Nigeria) can suffer from such a basic and critical necessity.
