Ebonyi airport hasn't seen even one airline one month after it was commissioned in an elaborate event in which the state government spent millions of naira.

The state government spent over 30 billion naira building this airport that has now been abandoned when most ebonyi indigenes cannot afford three square meals. It is estimated that ebonyi has 80% poverty rate, which is among the highest in Nigeria.

Literacy rate in ebonyi is equally very low as most ebonyi indigenes haven't seen the four walls of any educational institution.

When the airport was being constructed, some people argued that the billions being wasted would have been spent on human resources development and educating ebonyi people in formal educational system. Or rather invest the billions in commercial rice farm which is where ebonyi has absolute advantage in order to create employment opportunities for the army of unemployed ebonyi indigenes.

Till date, no Nigerian commercial airline has taken passengers to that airport. Is it that the airport isn't commercially viable which made major airlines to abandon it or that Ebonyi people cannot afford flight tickets?

Most people now use the airport as a motorpark and a sightseeing amusement center for many ebonyi indigenes who doesn't know what an airport looks like.

Does an agrarian state like Ebonyi really need an airport, more especially when enugu state airport is just 45mins away.

The idea of an airport in Abakaliki, a largely agrarian state does not make any economic sense with Enugu airport just a few kilometres away. Such funds could have been deployed to other sectors of the state. But largely I understand Umahi didn't perform badly in the area of infrastructure for the state

I don't understand this idea of every state wanting to construct an airport .
There is one in Lagos, Ogun wey no fit maintain roads wan build, Oyo own no see passengers, Osun wan build despite Ilorin and Ibadan having one close by already. Ondo dey manage one flight every 2days abi na weekly, ekiti wan build.
Enugu get, Imo get, Anambra don build even if e no dey efficient, Abia sef dey plan, Ebonyi too don build, as if plane ticket na same with okada.
Any state that is not an entertainment hub or commercial/manufacturing hub building airport just dey waste money.
Learnt Bayelsa too dey build despite Edo, Delta n Rivers having one each.
As we dey go like dis, after all states don get, local govt go start building theirs.

Aside the listed states below, I see no reason for building airports in other states, it is a waste of fund.

LAGOS.......... The nation's commercial capital.

ABUJA.......The nation's political capital.

RIVERS........Oil and Gas headquarters, other SS states can make use of it.

KANO.........Northern Commercial capital.

KADUNA.........Because of the military base there.

ANAMBRA....... Because of Onitsha and Nnewi that has large markets.

ABIA....... Because of Aba commercial and industrial potentials....

Aside these state others has no reason for any airport. They should use the one closer to them

Very correct .I was in Ekiti last week looking at the over head bridge Fayose constructed I was just shaking my head because of billions the project cost after all the over head bridge don't needed in that particular spot.
