, MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A witness says suspected members of a radical Muslim sect threw a bomb at soldiers in Nigeria's restive northeast, killing two bystanders at a nearby wedding.

The attack happened Saturday in Maiduguri, the home of the sect known locally as Boko Haram. A witness who asked for anonymity out of fear of the sect said the two bombers targeted soldiers in the neighborhood, but missed.

A military spokesman confirmed the attack Saturday night, but declined to offer any details.

Boko Haram wants the strict implementation of Shariah law in Nigeria. It claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 suicide car bombing at the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria that killed 23 people and wounded 116 others.
