2 Lagos ports control 65% of nation’s import cargo — NPA

NPA puts 5 terminal operators on watchlist
…Pressure on ports cause of infrastructural decay

The Managing Director, Nigerian Port Authority, NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko, yesterday, said that the Tin-Can Island Port, TCIP and Lagos Port Complex, LPC, handle between 60 and 65 percent of cargoes coming into the country, a situation which may have contributed to the strain in the ports infrastructure.

Against this backdrop, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, said until focus was shifted to the development of Nigeria port infrastructure to international standard, it would be difficult to achieve the objective of becoming the maritime hub in the West Africa sub region.

They spoke at the breakfast meeting organised by Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria, MARAN, in Lagos.

Bello-Koko, in his address, said that the reconstruction of the Tin-Can Island key wall was top on the agenda of the infrastructural renewal of the NPA which covers all ports across the country.

Koko who was represented by the General Manger, MD’s office, Mr. Ayo Durowaye, said: “These ports have been in existence since 1977. Between TCIP and LPC, in terms of volume, they are handling between 60 and 65 percent of cargo that are coming into the country, what we have in terms of effect on the facility is not something that is new, but what we are talking about is the steps that have been taken to ensure that we keep those facilities running.

“The reconstruction of the Tin Can Island key wall is top on the agenda of the infrastructural renewal of NPA which covers all ports across the country.

TCIP is one of the busiest in the country. Ports in Lagos are handling beyond their capacity in the last 20 years in terms of cargo handling. When you look at the pressure on them you expect that we should begin to do something about it and indeed we are doing something”.

On his part, Jime said: “There is no debate about the quality of the infrastructure that is available in this industry. If we are going to be competitive and live up to our dream of becoming the maritime hub in the West Africa sub-region, then it is clear to me that unless and until we focus squarely on the development of our infrastructure and make them of international standard, we would never be able to achieve our objective.

This is the Best Time to invest in Lagos and the neighbouring SW states!

This is the best time to invest in Yorubaland if you don't hate and resent your Yoruba hosts. The Yoruba and Yorubaland will bless you, your family and your investments!

Invest in Lagos today with a good patriotic heart and not with a heart full of hatred and bigotry against your host so you will not lose everything you bring to Yorubaland.

God bless Lagos state and may God bless Nigeria for ever!

65% is not that much considering the fact, that some people want the world to believe other ports are not working as if they force them to use Lagos ports.

Exactly.
Imagine what would happen if there is a deliberate effort to make the other ports more effective?

This means the southeast are the biggest drain on our forex reserves.

You guys contribute the most to the devaluation of the Naira.

The less Nigeria imports, the stronger the Naira will be.

The other ports in the south south can't do more than what they are doing .If they can, Jonathan would have allowed them to function up to that capacity .Or is Jonathan that clueless that he didn't know what he would have done that would benefit his region ?

Go and read up on the constraints and why despite several billions Federal Government pumped like wasted funds into those 'political' ports outside Lagos, they are still not optimal in value for money the FG invested to build them just to pander to tribal and geopolitical sentiments.

If you read the report very well, what NPA is admitting is the fact that the money FG should have used to upgrade the infrastructures in the two Lagos-based busiest functional ports in Nigeria and west African sub region that it diverted into the white elephant projects called seaports in the other parts of the country. Since 1977, those two ports have not witnessed massive infrastructure upgrades yet FG kept building new ones that are literally economically useless like the p in psychology.

It was the reality of the kind of envy of the Yoruba by folks like you and the spoiler the FG
played against Lagos that made us proceed with private-sector led port alternatives like the Lekki and Badagry Deep seaports so our progress will not be undermined forever in a multiethnic nation like ours.

Now our Lekki Deep seaport is up and we do not need envious compatriots blackmailing us that we held them down. Think out of the box. We have understood your game of acting as spoilers as if the Yoruba are sitting down on your progress when in actual fact the Yoruba are not.

That those two ports are suffering from poor infrastructure is because of envy and bitterness against the Yoruba for hosting those ports, it is not because FG could not have kept them in shape despite the fact that those ports were national assets serving the nation, employing all Nigerians and handling most of the cargoes in Nigeria. We will always triumph in this kind of reality that you are envious of us but please don't drag us into your inability to make a headway, we are not responsible for your woes and having suboptimal political ports. You reap what you sow.

Smh. Abeg, we don't want 'investments' from your kind of people who hate us as your host. We want investments from those who love us , respect our culture, leaders, elders and ready to live in peace with us and stay out of our local politics. We are not desperate and we do not wish you evil.

Na God we take beg you, take your 'investment' to where you love and will respect their values so that it can be rewarding stay for you there. If you bring it to our land where you hate its people, it will be futile and unfruitful.

When I served in the Yoruba speaking part of Kogi,I was shocked by the number of buses leaving Onitsha to Kogi,Ekiti,Ondo, Osun etc cos they usually loaded at same place.
There are more buses leaving Onitsha to the north compared to Lagos to the north.
For something like men's clothing, you will buy it cheaper in Onitsha compared to Lagos
