the core North had been under different civilizations before the British. Like the Songhai, the arabs, Fulani jihadists etc if the British didn’t come they may have still gotten to the south. Although this is nice, if true, but t isn't very impressive for something built 400 yrs ago. In comparison to world architecture, 400 yrs isn't a very long time.

Windsor Castle is almost 1000 years old.

The Roman Colosseum is 2000 years old.

There are structures in Athens that are about 3000yrs old or more. Most of this are partially damaged though.

There are smaller structures, some already damaged, which are way much older than all these.

That's not a sky scraper by any standard and I doubt any of those Emir of Kano gates are 400 years , the old city gates maybe yes but definitely not the Palace gates

If the emir and his people had access to the quoran before this structure was built then its still a foreign civilization.

In Benin Kingdom, Southern Nigeria, the city was also so urbanized in plan and facility that visiting portuguese ezplorers stood in awe centuries before the brirish plunderers destroyed it and plundered its treasures.

The difference is that the West African terrain lacked stone quarries, and they had to use clay to build for the most part, and humidity is an issue with regard to longevity of buildings.
