Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West is now enmeshed in crisis over who replaces the late National Vice Chairman of the party, Honourable Soji Adagunodo.

Adagunodo had passed away on Monday 8th May 2023 and was buried on Saturday 22nd July 2023.

The late National Vice Chairman South West of the party occupied the seat as representative of Osun State but never enjoyed the support of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s faction of the PDP in the state.

Shortly after Adagunodo’s demise, the Adeleke group started moves to have him replaced by a member of their faction, a development that was consummated last week when Hon. Kamoru Ajisafe was presented to replace him by the Adeleke faction of party.


Miffed by the development, some Board of Trustees and foundation members of the party in the state who have been sidelined by the administration of Ademola Adeleke in the state for over a year since the gubernatorial election on July 16, 2022, made a counter move by nominating two names of party members to the party out of which one is expected to be picked to replace the deceased.

The two names put forward are Engr Yinka Jimoh Adigun, a one-time Chairman of Ejigbo Local Government and former Zonal PRO of the party while Prince Adelani Ajanaku, an erstwhile Special Adviser on Economic Matters in the state, is the second nominee.

Already, the decision of this group to forward the names of Adigun and Ajanaku as possible replacement to fill the vacant position has sent jitters in the camp of Adeleke who are said to be confused on what next to do.

South West Executive members of the party who were led by Adagunodo before his death, are said to be empowered by the PDP party constitution to elect who occupies the seat in this kind of scenario.

Behold! the New South West PDP Acting National Vice Chairman, CHEIF RAMON OWOKONIRAN.
Chief Rahman Owokoniran is a former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He was appointed commissioner for Housing (2003) and then commissioner for chieftaincy and boundary affairs (2006) under Senator Bola Tinubu's tenure as Lagos State Governor.
He led as the Chairman of the committee for the creation of the twenty Local government areas and seventeen Local development councils in Lagos State.
He emerged as the Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria) after elections which were held in Osogbo, Osun State in 2021.
He has been endorsed by the Zonal leadership of the party in acting capacity as the National Vice Chairman as a result of the death of Hon Olusoji Adagunodo.


We await Makinde’s directive on Adagunodo’s replacement — Oyo PDP Oyo State
The Oyo State Chapter of the party has said it awaits the directive of the leader of the party in the state, Governor Seyi Makinde, on whom to support, notwithstanding the nomination of Mr Kamarudeen Ajisafe by the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the next South West Chairman of the party,
It would be recalled that the PDP in Osun State had last week nominated a former chairman of Irepodun Local Government Area of the State, Mr Kamarudeen Ajisafe, as a replacement for Mr Soji Adagunodo, the South West Chairman of the party, until his death in May.
Asked whether the Oyo PDP aligned with the nomination of the Kamarudeen, Public Relations Officer of the Oyo PDP, Mr Micheal Ogunsina, speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on Monday, said the Oyo State PDP presently had no candidate to become the South West Chairman of the party.
Ogunsina said the party had not arrived at a position and would only toe the line stipulated by the party’s leader, Makinde.
Ogunsina said: “Oyo State PDP currently does not have an exact position on who replaces Mr Soji Adagunodo.
“We are completely on the same page with Governor Seyi Makinde; whoever the governor picks and supports is the person we are also supporting.

“We are fully behind the decision of His Excellency as it concerns that matter. From Oyo State, there is no candidate for now.
“Yes, we are aware that Osun PDP has nominated Mr Kamarudeen. We are not for or against; we are waiting for the directive of the governor.”
The nomination of the Osun PDP had also sparked a reaction in the South West chapter of the party, where through the zonal spokesperson, Mr Sanya Atofarati, in a communique, it maintained that the South West Zonal Secretary of the party, Mr Rahman Owokoniran, will act pending the election of a new zonal chairman.
