The average poor black South African is lazy, older, uneducated and knows nothing about the many government programs created to benefit him. He lives in a informal settlement(“organised slum”) and does unskilled jobs which earn him R700 – R2 000/$100 - $285pm. Most of his income is spent on food, clothing and transport. He gets water and electricity free of charge. His children are educated at a no fee government school. His unemployed wife collects child support grants from the state, R240/$34 per child per month. His poor neighbour who is unemployed and over the age of 60 receive a old age pension of R1 010/$144 from the state.

The average working class black South African(huge chunk of the population) has some form of education, lives in a township or a state subsidized housing project. He works for an unknown small to medium company and earns R4 000 – R8 000/$571 - $1 143pm. He spends his money on the basics but indulges now and again. He still expects the government to do more than they have done and in half the time. He's generally an ungrateful person and fails to recognize that his standard of living has improved dramatically since 1994. He now expects electricity to be cheap and on all the time, he expects safe drinking water from his tap, he expects free or subsidized education for himself and his kids, he expects many other things: all of these things that he expects and which are provide are services that he could only dream of in the years before 1994. Him and his friends also enjoy going out to the streets from time to time to trash the streets and cause havoc demanding a wage increase.

The average middle class black South African lives in a suburb full of trees, is young in age and smart. He knows a lot about the pro-black policies in place and he uses them for his benefit. He's already used one of the policies that made it easy for him to receive university education using the governments pocket. He already has a degree and is studying part-time for a post-grad, he plans to become an expert in his field so that he can benefit from another pro-black policy which seeks to utilise only black experts for government projects. He now has a comfortable managerial job in one of the big well known corporations thanks to the pro-black policy called Employment Equity which practically forces big white owned business to hand over managerial positions and key decision making positions to black people. Because of this he now averages a salary ranging from R14 000/$2 000pm to R49 000/$7 000pm. Most of his money is spent on repaying loans on two of his prime assets: his suburban house and his car. He also spends money on private education for his kids as well as private healthcare. He's a major critic of the government even though it's policies have and are helping him.

The average black South African upper class lives a good swanky life, is well educated and has benefited from the pro-black policy called Black Economic Empowerment(BEE) which practically forces white owned business to sell part of their business to black people usually at a discount financed by white owned banks. The black upper class is also created by the same policy(BEE) which makes it easy for black people to start and grow businesses through friendly loans, specialist support etc, eg. Government only does business with black owned businesses where possible: when they decide to build a hospital they insist that the hospital be designed by a black architectural company, civil works to be done by black engineers, project to be managed by black project managers etc. This has created a black upper class who have become rich from government tender contacts, many of them have become known as “tenderpreneur.”

The SA Blecks need to step up.  White Farmers Own 90% Of South Africa's Agricultural Land! How can 9% of the population own 90% of the Farm Land?

BLECKS in South Africa are slaves in their own land!  If the White farmers leave they will be poorer than Zimbabwe

@ Paniki

Most people that commentaobut South Africa have never been to the country and no nothing about what makes the country tic. They read headlines about this and that and come to all kinds of uninformed conclusions.

Stop wasting your time trying to convince people thousands of miles away of what happens in your neighbourhood.

nigerians are the only people i know who think it is not the responsibility of govts to provide for their citizenry.

do you have a problem with black south africans and what their govts provide for them, would you have preferred for them to live like destitutes in their own country as is the case in nigeria?

at least they fought for equality - what have you done to free yourself from the black colonialists who rule over you in nigeria?

Let me state that I'm a black South African born and bred in Tembisa. I got educated using the governments pocket and because I'm black my climb up the corporate ladder has been relatively easy. My black friends have all gone through the pro-black favouritism and now they are educated professionals and all of them are living comfortable lives. Not every South African is like that, I just provided what I assess to be the average black South African at present.

Why can't they when the country had a century long imperialism aka apartheid. The white farmers stole/usurped the lands from the blacks and even though apartheid is abolished, there is no way of retrieving the lands from them. But I am indeed proud of black south Africans in this area because if it is in Nigeria, militants would have raised their heads long time ago to take back and eventually destroy the lands.

The case of apartheid is like getting justice after a loved one is murdered. Although the culprit will be sent to prison, it still will not bring back your loved one. Apartheid may be over, but how will black South Africans retrieve their lost/stolen properties?. Many of the original owners were murdered or the lands were purchased for peanuts because the owners had no other source of livelihood. They practically frustrated them into giving out their properties for a paltry sum so they can prove it was legally purchased.

It is now left for the black controlled govt to make regulations that will eventually bring black people up to par with their white citizens although I fear such move if not carefully planned may send the farmers packing to neighboring countries like Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia or Angola and such move will export South African jobs to neighboring countries.

The war is not yet completely over because they are still waging the economic war against blacks.

They need to create policies to attract the best African talent from around the world - that is there only hope. Most Bleck SAs are uneducated and will need about 100 years to get up to scratch, by that time the Europeans would have consolidated their grip on SA for another 600 years. How can they retrieve 90% of their land back? When the government takes the land back from the white farmers, the Bleck SAs are so dumb they sell the land back to the Whites - its hopeless for them in that respect.

They are not dumb, rather they are broke and there is no limit to what poverty can do to you. Apartheid may be over but it will take another century for the blacks in RSA to get their lives back.

We are essentially saying the same thing; they have a giant task and the best way to overcome their problem is to create a paradigm shift in Africa.  They can develop policies to attract the best and richest African talent in the world; but unfortunately xenophobia against their African brothers is rife.   Most African nations went through what SA is going through today in the 60s, but SA dose not seem to be willing to learn from their mistakes.
Re: The Average South African by paniki(m): 11:53pm On Oct 15, 2011
Before 1994 black South Africans had nothing but now after 17 years blacks have manage to overtake whites on all levels except research output. Black people now have a far greater purchasing power as a collective which means the economy is dependent on them. If the black working and middle class were to fall to the ground and die then the big South African banks, telecoms, retailers ect will all lose majority of their revenue and value/market cap. A company such as MTN makes as much money from it's black SA subscribers as it does from over twice it's Nigerian subscribers, this shows that we have serious purchasing power(http://www.mtn.com/Investors/Pages/Overview.aspx).

If black people didn't have money to buy the Japanese cars, German cars and so on then these companies would shut down the many assembly plants they have in SA and move to places where there's a market for their cars but the opposite is happening, they are investing more and expanding production to cater for increased demand from black people(http://www.southafrica.info/business/investing/bmw-060909.htm). If black people didn't have money then the many new malls wouldn't be popping up everywhere. After all, you only open a shop if you think that people can afford to buy and you expand the shop or build a new shop if more people start coming to buy.

South Africa already has policies to attract skilled labour from all over the world. We have Cuban doctors working in rural hospitals. Teachers from Zimbabwe, Kenya even Nigeria working mainly in rural schools. You will find many foreign engineers working at the Eskom power plant construction sites. This is because every skilled South African already has a job but the rate of our development requires more skilled people to insure that the robust development is done properly. Skilled Africans in SA do not experience any animosity as their unskilled illegal counterparts. A Nigerian scientist working at a university will give you a different take on SA compared to a Nigerian hustler on the streets of Hillbrow. One adds value to our country the other destroys value.

Lastly, government insures that every child is educated. Right now we have 99% of SA children in school receiving quality education. This will give them the necessary foundation to make something of themselves in the future. Their future is somewhat cushioned since all entry level jobs are in a way reserved only for them. I'm one of those who received quality education early on in the government drive to educate citizens and it has paid off for me and many others, the same will happen for the young ones who seem to have a much brighter future even though many people, who know little about SA, predict its doom.
