President Bola Tinubu's administration may tinker with and embrace the reform programme initiated by ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Reforms and Tax Policy disclosed the information in Abuja Former Vice President Osinbajo initiated the Voluntary and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) as acting President

The Nigerian government plans to reintroduce the national amnesty programme operated by the administration of Muhammadu Buhari. The director of Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Stephen Kilebi, signed the press statement announcing the decision on Thursday.

Taiwo Oloyede, the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, confirmed the development at a two-day retreat in Abuja. Oloyede said that the Committee expected some tax deliverables, which include optimum taxes, harmonised revenue collection functions, revised national tax policy, national fiscal framework, bills preparation for a constitutional amendment, revenue optimisation, production of a model template for sub-nationals and establishment of the federal tax amnesty scheme.

Osinbajo introduced the scheme as acting President

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who served as Acting President in 2017, signed Executive Order No. 004 to implement the Voluntary and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS). The tax amnesty scheme provides a limited timeframe for taxpayers to regularise their tax status concerning previous tax periods and pay taxes due with certain benefits.

The programme started on July 1, 2027, and lasted until March 31, 2018. Punch reports that Going by the pronouncements of the Tax Reform Committee Chairman, Oloyede, Tinubu’s administration may adopt the scheme to accelerate tax payments among Nigerians and corporate bodies.

Minister of Finance promises GDP per capita growth

The Minister of Finance and the Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, told Nigerians that better days are coming with implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda. The minister admitted that the petrol subsidy removal slowed down the economy. Still, interventions were implemented to alleviate the pains caused by the reforms and plug leakages in subsidies.

The minister revealed that the constant drop in GDP per capita is over as the government embarks on the renewed hope agenda. In May, the administration of Buhari proposed five new taxes to be added to the pool of taxes paid by Nigerians. One tax that raised eyebrows was the 5% excise duty tax on mobile telephone services, fixed telephone, and internet services. Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami, said Nigeria needs tough reforms to increase tax revenue.

Legit.ng reported that President Bola Tinubu unveiled a fiscal policy and tax reform committee comprising private and public experts. The Committee is chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, a tax and policy expert, and is expected to deliver tax reforms achievable in 30 days. This Taiwo Oyedele seems to know his onions. I am impressed by his approach as it has human face and recognizes peculiarities of Nigerian society. I won't be surprised if he was the person who worked with former VP Osinbajo on this tax initiative.

This is highly commendable of Mr President. Osinbajo's tax amnesty programme is actually a brilliant one. I think adopting it a wise decision.

Tax amnesty! How does that help the poor. A case of robbing Peter to pay Paul? What policy of this illegitimate president have ever favoured the masses in the first place?

With all his clueless somersulting economic policies and its attendant economic strangulation, total obliteration of the middle class and choking of the downtrodden masses, all Tinubu knows is taxes, money, money, money and more money

Tinubu cannot discount anything that has an atom of tax in it.

The source of the initiative or idea definitely notwithstanding.

These are the "baddest" appointments of this administration:

1. Wale Edun --- Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy
2. Bosun Tijani --- Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (A strong critic of govt, he wasn't in Tinubu's caucus. Selected based on his previous results)
3. David Umahi --- Works
4. Nyesom Wike --- FCT (main criterion - Can step on toes).
5. Lateef Fagbemi --- Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (Old school law)
6. Taiwo Oloyede --- the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms (Extemely competent. Has critized many bad policies that I know arent good. For him to want to revert to Kemi Adeosun's initiation (backed by Osinbajo), something good is coming out.

The only unsuccessful appointment that pained me was Mallam El Rufai for Power. I wish to see how he could perform in a ministry that has been a failure since the existence of Nigeria. OBJ brought a top technocrat in his time, but that guy messed up saying witches are responsible for poor electricity in Nigeria. Seriously, they should have allowed El Rufai to try this sector. It was meant to break or make him....but we can't know. A sector Babatunde Fashola (the most outstanding governor from 2007 to 2015) had to give up and focus on Works because he knew it was going to stain his clean record of performance. Lol. No be juju be that?
