A Yoruba man was the leader of the first Nigerian coup.

Commission, he visited the Nigeria High Commission, London. The subaltern tried to let Lt.Col Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, a superior officer and Defence Attache, know that the officer corps of the Army had to be Nigerianised.

He also made this known to another senior officer, Lt.Col. Samuel Ademulegun. For an officer who was yet to be posted, this signaled danger. Thus British officers halted the posting of graduates as combatants after Ademulegun failed to move to the Education Corps.

Lt.Col. Ademulegun, alias ‘Cyintomen,’ was the sixth university graduate to join the Nigeria Army. The first five were Ojukwu, Victor Banjo, Olufemi Olutoye, Ifeajuna and Oluwole Rotimi, all his seniors.

By 1965, Major Ademoyega was ready to hit political power. The man had done his calculations well. He loathed Ojukwu under whom he once served in Kaduna. Both were Historians. Ojukwu graduated from Cambridge and was the son of a millionaire.

Banjo was Ademoyega’s pal and had revolutionary tendencies. Like Ojukwu, he was a Lt. Col. That was not good for ambition because both Ojukwu and Banjo were also nursing presidential plans. They could have known about the Majors’ plan.

Olutoye got to know, from Nzeogwu, in far away India when they went for a course with Major Gabriel Okonweze. It is like Ademoyega deliberately kept away fellow Yoruba officers. Lt. Fola Oyewole was only called up by Ifeajuna a day to the coup.

Major Olusegun Obasanjo shared apartment with Ademoyega in Kaduna and was fondly called ‘Ezigbo Obam’[My good Oba] by Nzeogwu. Neither Major Ademoyega nor Major Nzeogwu exposed the plot. Captain Ganiyu Adeleke was drafted in the last minute.

Major Ademoyega looked at Ifeajuna’s credentials as Nigeria’s first Commonwealth gold medalist. He picked Nzeogwu as the country’s first Military Intelligence Officer and banked on the Sandhurst training of Anuforo and Onwuatuegwu.

Ademoyega also made sure the Igbo officers he picked were highly detribalized. Nzeogwu spoke fluent Hausa and attended St. John’s College, Kaduna with Anuforo. Okafor who was born in Kaduna and was said to have a Tiv mom.

Ifeajuna taught at Ilesha Grammar School & Ebenezer High School, Abeokuta. Ademoyega monitored all these people and the plan was to free Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The officer who organized the aircraft that would bring Awo from Calabar Prison was Major Theophilus Nzegwu, the first Igbo Air Force officer, whose wife bore a Yoruba name, Aina.

Ademoyega and Nzeogwu fixed January 15, as D Day. He was in Kaduna for that. And Major Ademoyega was supposed to broadcast to the nation. He did not task himself with the arrest of anyone.

The coup failed in Lagos. He blamed Major D.Okafor. Ademoyega ran to Kaduna. Then found himself in Biafra. He punched Ifeajuna in prison, survived the war.At the end he was bold enough to admit it was not an Igbo coup. That followed him to the grave in 2007.

Major Adewale Ademoyega is legendary, it's sad how Nigeria never get to acknowledge him, the ideology of the first military coup would have gotten Nigeria far better and civilized if it wasn't hijacked by the government of Ironsi and all the military rulers after him.

I WILL CREATE A THREAD ON THE FULL IDEOLOGY OF THE COUP FROM HIS BOOK "WHY WE STRUCK"

Nigeria won't have gotten better. At the end of the day, it would have still been a broke nation....because the basis of our economy has and always has been earning money from exporting raw materials and using the money to import.

What the coupists were proposing was a more equitable way of sharing the money. At the end, it still does not address the basic problem.

The problem with selling raw materials...oil included...is that the prices of the things jumps up and down. Like oil now, some 3 years ago was 24 dollars a barrel, and now it is 86 dollars, and in 2008 it was 145 dollars a barrel. Stability indeed.

And then there is the fact that most Nigerians are interested in illicit mining....

P.S The only coupists that get acknowledged are those who win. That's why we know of Sankara and Mengistu and Ghaddafi and Mobutu and Amin Dada....they won. And why we do not know of Hezekiah ochuka, because he lost.

Ademoyega was not the leader of the coup....but he certainly was one of the 'leaders'. (Nzeogwu was also not necessarily a leader too. He may have been brought in later.).

Also, the coup was not an Igbo coup anyway. (Nzeoqwu for example was a pan-Africanist leftist, and more Hausa in culutre than Igbo anyway...and he wasn't Igbo really. ).Why it got to be called an Igbo coup is because Nigerians basically believe that if your son is in power, some of the goodies trickle down to you. The coupists killed a disproportionate number of people from one or two tribal and regional blocs, ..who happened to be in power at the time....and that led to anger, and to the civil war. Simplistic tribal propaganda helped.

It is a mistake most Nigerians make to day. Which is why politics is a bitter battle. Many Nigerians tend to forget that they have state and LGA's.

Nope! Major Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was never among the original conspirators, but conscripted late December 1965 and he was being seen as the arrow head of the coup because of his spectacular success over the northern province of the coup operation field.

The master brains behind the January 15, 1966 coup are Major Ifeanyi Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Major Adewale Ademoyega and Major and Major Christian Anufuro.

Revisionist.

Ezeogwu the Anioma igbo man spearheaded the coup, which is brother aguiyi Ironsi benefited from and did not execute him for. In addition, majority of the coup plotters were of Igbo extraction.

Nzeogwu led a group of soldiers on a supposed military exercise, taking them to attack the official residence of the premier of the north, Sir Ahmadu Bello, in a bloody coup that saw the murder of the Premiers of Northern and Western Nigeria. The Prime Minister (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa), a federal minister (Festus Okotie-Eboh), and top army officers from the Northern and Western regions of the nation were also murdered.

From the existing government, the premier of the Eastern region (Michael Okpara), the President of the Nigerian federation (Nnamdi Azikiwe) and the Igbo Army Chief (Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi) were notable survivors.

According to a Nigerian Police Special Branch Report, Nzeogwu executed at least four army and police security personnel including one of the men on his team (Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke). Nzeogwu also participated in the execution of Col. Raph Shodeinde, his superior officer at the Nigerian Military Training College and is reported to have shot indiscriminately at fleeing women and children.

Aguyi Ironsi assumed power, and Nzeogwu was later arrested in Lagos on 18 January 1966 contrary to agreements earlier reached between Nzeogwu and Ironsi. He was held in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos before being transferred to Aba Prison in the Eastern Region where he was released in March 1967 by Governor of the Eastern Region and future President of Biafra Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.

Lies, Nzeogwu made two broadcast and there was no mention of when and how Awolowo would be released from prison.

The leader of the coup was ifeajuna.

Awo being freed from prison and made president was the lies ifeajuna sold to ademoyega for him to be a partaker in the plot.
