Chinese secretly mining titanium ore in Nigeria intercepted; Ruitai firm shut

Ruitai’s board of directors are all Chinese nationals not eligible to acquire a small-scale mining licence as claimed.

The Akwa Ibom government has closed down a Chinese mining firm, Ruitai Mining Company, for failing to produce an operation licence.

Uno Etim Eno, the commissioner for environment and mineral resources, disclosed this to journalists in Uyo.

Mr Eno said the firm could not provide authorisation documents for titanium ore mining in Ibeno.

He said the Chinese company had been mining titanium ore secretly in the area, before it was intercepted and ordered to produce relevant documents.

Mr Eno added that during inspection, it was discovered that the firm could not produce a mining licence as well as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report to show impact of its operations on the host community.

“The joint ministerial inspection team included the permanent secretary, Mrs Iquo Abia, on arrival at Ibeno community, were conducted round the mining site by the chairman of Ibeno Local Government Area, High Chief Williams Mkpa. The team discovered black clay-like minerals contained in sacks of 50kg, which was identified by the miners as titanium ore,” said the commissioner.

Mr Eno added, “On critical examination of the site amidst tight security, the managing director and director of the company, Zeng Zhonghuan and Huang Ying, were not available at the site. The available staff members could not provide any information or documents.”

Mr Uno said that the ministry of environment discovered that the company was an exploration company while the board of directors are all Chinese nationals not eligible to acquire the small-scale mining licence as claimed.

“Ruitai mining company should terminate its mining operations forthwith, until due clearance legitimising its operation is completed with the state government,” said Mr Eno.

They are scattered all over Abuja and most northern States experiencing insecurity and banditry. The Govt pretends to not know about it but many of them are beneficiaries of the proceeds..

The Chinese workers are not alone. There are some political bigwigs they're definitely working for. Chinese workers cannot just enter the country and start mining illegally without the backing of some Nigerian thieves.

Yorubas have a saying... 'bi iku ile o ba pani ti ode o le ri ni pa'.

The Chinese, Indians and whatnot illegally mining our resources are doing so with the help of insiders.. check those MDAs like Mines and Steels Development, Customs, Immigration and the rest, you'll see the real problem within the system.

Those foreign thieves capitalize on greed of some highly placed and connected Nigerians to be stealing our resources.. Nigerians should not only be attacking the President all the time but also face those with authorities in the Public service who are backing foreigners to steal from us.

We can't blame the Chinese miners.

The blame here goes to the state government's over reliance on funds from Abuja.

With restructuring, states would be innovative in creating wealth by making use of many available natural resources to cater for the state indigenes there by creating employment opportunities for the people.

But everyone is waiting for the manna from Abuja because they too lazy to turn their god given wealth into money.

I believe the subsidy removal will force us to look inwards and be more innovative in wealth creation.

Really Nigeria as a country is blessed. Before you blame the chinese for mining illegallly, remember your leaders are still sleeping and not yet ready for the future.

They don’t belt too much in paper qualifications, they give their people chance to try….

It’s harder in the class room and easier in the real life…
