I may be banned for this post, but the facts need to be set straight.

Anatomy of the problem:

In the thread referred to here: https://www.nairaland.com/7825461/drop-name-nigeria-demeaning-wole. One poster, in a now deleted post, claimed, and according to him, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in an act of benevolence, prevented the North from decimating the Igbos during the war.

Such dangerous, blatant lies peddled as facts must not be allowed to exist without rebuttal. This is how false narratives are created and perpetuated as true accounts of historical events if left uncorrected. Therefore, the falsehood is counted as follows:

Awolowo was the architect of the wartime starvation policy that starved millions of Biafrans and caused the death of Biafran children, women, and the elderly. As a federal commissioner, he advised Gowon to blockade Biafra in a strategy of starvation to force the people to surrender.

Awolowo is a war criminal who knowingly committed a crime against humanity, starving thousands of Biafrans and killing hundreds of thousands of children and women.

Background:

Now, let us also remember that at the outbreak of the war, the criminal Awolowo was in prison serving a sentence for treason. A common criminal who habitually conspired and violated the laws of the Republic and was duly tried, convicted, and sent to prison.

Obafemi Awolowo was convicted of treasonable felony, conspiracy to commit felony, and conspiracy to effect an unlawful purpose, and sentenced to ten, five, and two years imprisonment on all three counts, and was imprisoned in 1963. He was later released from Calabar Prison after the outbreak of hostilities in August 1966.

Some neo-revisionist historians dispute who actually ordered his release. But we also remember that after the declaration of Biafra on May 30, 1967, Calabar, where Awolowo was serving his prison sentence, effectively became Biafran territory and under direct Biafran control. So, logically, who had the territorial authority to order his release and what were the terms of his agreement?

Let's be clear, Ojukwu released the unrepentant tribalist and traitor who had repaid him and his people in bad faith.

This is a matter of historical records. Awolowo was in Calabar Prison.

He was released by then Lt. Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, military governor of Eastern Nigeria. That is a fact. Chief Awolowo never contradicted this very fact in his living days.

This occurrence is one of those facts of our history as a people and country. Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu stated this over and over in many interviews (Newbreed, 1983, Newswatch, etc.) and his claim has until today was never contradicted or denied by those close to both men or time witnesses.

Ojukwu has made his claim several times. He made the claim even while Chief Awolowo was up and about. I do not recall Chief Awolowo disputing or contradicting Dim Ojukwu's claim.

Incendiary statements such as those above do not help clarify the fact for posterity, and it is those of you unsavory liars who now feel the need to rewrite history.

Lolz

Awolowo was set free the minute Calabar was liberated from Biafra and your Biafran orc army chased away.

But can you explain why you are villifing Awolowo after regurgitating the lie that the Jan 15 Ibo coupists wanted to release him and hand power over to him.

Ohus are by the most shameless liars.

It was Gowon who released Awolowo after liberating Calabar from Biafran orcs who had annexed all of present day SS in their useless Biafra Republic.

Why I released Awolowo from prison β€” Gowon
ByDimeji Kayode-Adedeji October 17, 2015 Reading Time: 2 mins read
A former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, on Thursday said his administration released the late Obafemi Awolowo from prison to end the political unrest in the South West and ensure peace across the country.

Mr. Gowon, who spoke to journalists after paying condolence visit to the Awolowos at Ikenne, also noted that he was privileged to have been used by God to ensure release of the late sage from prison.

The former head of state, who was at Ikenne on account of the death of HID Awowolo, disclosed that the late matriarch was the one who persuaded Mr. Awolowo to be part of his military government.

β€œβ€™It was my fortune and I thank God that it was me that had the opportunity to release Papa from prison from Calabar to Lagos and certainly to be able to help us have peace in the West at that time and then we came,” Mr. Gowon recalled.

β€œMama was very happy and very grateful for what has happened and I can assure you, that is what earned me the respect of Mama right throughout her life. But yes, what we did was alright.

Awolowo's greatest mastreo stroke wasn't starving you ohus but using the pen to invalidate all stolen monies iin Central Banks in both Midwest and Eastern Nigeria appropriated by your rogue Ojukwu and his criminal cabinet .

Ojukwu had also decieved your foolish grandparents to exchange their Nigerian currency for worthless paper Biafran pounds.

With one single stroke of the pen, Awolowo made all Nigerian pound notes held by the Biafran govt totally useless.

I have told you idiots to hold Ojukwu's estate for your money and not blame Awolowo who was magnimous enough to grant each and every ohu Β£20 after the war.

On Awo's Pardon and Release from Prison

The following is the government edict (Government Notice No. 1207/1966)
ordering the release of Awo on August 2, 1966.
By His Excellency Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon, Head of the National
Military Government, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the
Republic of Nigeria.
WHEREAS Chief Obafemi Awolowo, having been duly convicted of the
offences of treasonable felony, conspiracy to commit a felony and
conspiracy to effect an unlawful purpose, and sentenced to imprisonment
for ten, five and two years respectively on all three counts:
AND WHEREAS the said Chief Obafemi Awolowo, having served a portion
of the sentence originally imposed on him in September 1963:
AND WHEREAS the Supreme Military Council after reviewing his case, is
pleased to remit the sentence and to grant a full pardon:
NOW THEREFORE, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 101 (1)
of the Constitution of the Republic and of all other power enabling it
in that behalf, the Supreme Military Council do hereby remit unexpired
portion of the sentence imposed on the aforesaid chief Obafemi Awolowo
and grant him a full pardon.
GIVEN UNDER my hand and the Public Seal of the Republic of Nigeria at
Lagos this 2nd day of August, one thousand nine hundred and sixty-six.

So Ohus, take note and know that Awo was released by Gowon who in his capacity as military HoS the powers to grant pardons was vested on and not one philandering buffoon in Enugu.

The main reason Biafrans starved was because of the following :.

1. Heebo land could not and still can't feed itself. This was the only part of Africa suffering from hunger and famine at the time of European contact. Several European authors had echoed acute famine that prevailed in Ibo land and correlated this to why cannibalism was so wife spread in Ibo land.

2. Biafra had no means to import food as there was no money. Awolowo had made rubbish of all appropriated Nigerian currency stolen by Biafran soldeirs on the direct orders of Ojukwu in both commercial banks in the Midwest and Eastern region. The Biafran pounds was backed on that stolen money after Ojukwu ordered all Nigerian pound notes be exchanged for his worthless fiat Biafran currency. After Awo changed the currency notes in Nigeria, the Biafran pounds became totally worthless as no one will touch it .

3. The only imports to Biafra were arms supply from their allies France who did not agree to supply Biafra with much needed food. France was very happy sending Ojukwu weapons in promissory for oil wells in the annexed Niger Delta than send one measure of wheat.

4. Biafra was then dependent solely on international aid organizations like the Red Cross for all its food.

Siege or no siege, the yeast was starving like they used to until colonialism fixed their Hobbesian state of existence
