INEC’s Failure To E-Transmit Results Has Broken Nigerians’ Trust – Laolu Akande by TheRareGem1(f): 9:07pm On Sep 08, 2023
Laolu Akande, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s aide believes the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) inability to electronically transmit results of the presidential and National Assembly polls has broken Nigerians’ trust in the agency.

While INEC had in the lead up to the February 2023 exercise repeatedly said it would transmit polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), that did not happen during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Despite criticisms from Nigerians, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) ruled that the electoral umpire is at liberty to determine how to transmit election results.

In the wake of the development, Akande said INEC’s inability to e-transmit results has reduced the commission’s trust level among Nigerians.

It is important to establish something we cannot basically run away from. INEC came out of this election as a damaged good. There is no doubt about that. INEC itself set up a standard. INEC determined the guidelines. INEC committed to the people of Nigeria that this is how we are going to declare the result of this election. In fact, the chairman of INEC went abroad and said, ‘What we are going to do is that this results, when we get it, we would put it on IReV in real-time’,” he said on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

According to him, the comment heightened people’s trust in the electoral umpire.

“But guess what? When it was time for INEC to fulfill its guidelines – for certain reasons we could talk about that- INEC failed to do what it said it would do. Now it is right that if you look at the law, and I think the judges also affirmed, INEC has not really broken the law. But INEC has broken the trust of the Nigerian people,” he added.

The development, he argued, not only affects INEC’s integrity, it raises legitimacy questions for those who won the elections

“It is a problem for political legitimacy for people who came out of that system,” the former VP aide said.

“So, there is a lot of cynicism, there is a lot of distrust [about those declared winners]. INEC is for that,” he noted

It's Shameful to have spent such a huge amount looted and not used.

Those who celebrate EVIL think they are doing others. In their stupidity they trade their future and that of the unborn generations.

Thank God for someone like Peter Obi. I expect him to get to the supreme court and see to the end of it. We are solidly behind him. Tomorrow, if opposition wins, APC can go to the Supreme court and get the following judgement that a drug lord cannot be president. That 25% Abuja is compulsory. That electronic transmission is compulsory. When you ask why, they will ask why you didn't go to Supreme court.

It will surely come to a time when agabdo magas will get screwed. I'm very sure of that.

God bless OBIDIENTS all over the world.

Trust once broken can hardly be recovered

No matter the outcome at supreme Court, I'll be a fool to ever trust any statement from INEC again

They won the election but lost the people

Throwing away electronic transmission of election results is taking one step forward and three steps backwards.

No nation makes progress by this kind of negative movement.

The picture says it all.

How can a nation move forward when votes don't count.

Democracy is government by the people and for the people... But when government is longer by the people then how will the government act in the interest of the people?

The biggest loser is NIGERIA because never again will the progressive youths come out to register to vote, never again will progressive Nigerians bother to vote because they know that their votes are useless.

INEC has set Nigeria several years back and the nation may never ever recover from it.

The former senate president said openly that capturing of results real time from polling units and sending to server is what they signed into law.

INEC chairman MAHMOOD YAKUBU said several times that capturing of election result real time from the polling unit and sending to the server IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT.

Furhermore, the electoral act in section 64 subsection 4 b clearly states...

(4) A collation officer or returning officerat an election shall collate and announce the result of an election, subject to his or her verification and confirmation that the

(b) the votes stated on the collated result are correct and consistent with the votes or results recorded and transmitted directly from polling units under section 60 (4) of this Act.

Watch INEC spokesman reiterate this fact in this very short clip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-gIcIqeEfM?si=GIW-sLimfSL1V6HU

I have always believed that once a bill is signed into law it becomes binding and failure to adhere will have legal consequences.

But in a strange twist, the tribunal has ruled that it is not mandatory despite being a legal requirement in the electoral act.

Perhaps if well meaning Nigerians push the government to make it mandatory that INEC must capture and transmit voting results real time from polling units to servers and failure to do this will void the result of the effected polling unit... Maybe Nigerians might give birth to another Democracy...

For now I will say "May the soul of Democracy in Nigeria rest in peace" .

This one whose principal is out of government has started confessing what is incongruent with his party’s assertion. Abi no be the APC that Ahmed Lawan and former chair - Abdullahi Adamu said electoral act didn't allowed for electronic transmission of election results? Meanwhile INEC have been @ variance with them.

Tinubu came a distant 3rd, INEC needed to swap him with Obi, and in order to avoid being caught, they blocked result upload.

Tinubu was thrashed in Lagos to the shock of INEC and APC, they used rigging during final manual collation to reduce Obi's Lagos winning to the barest minimum. Same happened in Rivers, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Borno, Ondo, etc.

That is why Tinubu and his Agbado supporters hate Peter Obi more than Atiku they claimed came second. If not tell me the rational or reason why someone that came 1st will be more worried about the person that came distant 3rd more than he is worried about the person that came 2nd if not guilty conscience? What did Obi do to Tinubu or his evil supporters that they hated him so much more than Atiku that is closer to their candidate's position? Atiku took Tinubu to US court for certificate forgery, never for one day did Tinubu and his gang of evil supporters criticized or attacked Atiku, instead they left Atiku and be attacking Obi that didn't take Tinubu to a US court, God is watching all of you, God is not sleeping.

Tinubu knows he is sitting on Peter Obi's mandate, but let him not worry, he won't enjoy it in peace, nature will definitely fight back, so Tinubu while you are gallivanting about as the President, be getting prepared for nature's payback.

It will actually take a special kind of effort to get the kind of participation in future elections like we witnessed this year. The worst part is that no one can be blackmailed again into voting think it is their non-participation that has not made Nigeria a great nation. Contrary to that, many of us have now made peace with the fact that Nigeria is not (and may never be) great because our votes do not count, not because we do not vote. Those celebrating will understand what this betrayal of trust by INEC will portend for this nation in the years to come.

In one breadth, you said no law was broken, meaning the election was carried out according to the law of the land. In another, you are castigating INEC. Why the duplicity?
Yes INEC said I will use IREV but you (parties & individuals) also know that INEC can do otherwise, which is what the court affirmed (and you agreed that no law was broken).
If you are saying that you are not aware of that, then you are incompetent to win too. Afterall election should be won by the most popular candidate who played according to the rules!
Was your winning contingent on IREV?Common! You have physical copy of election result to prove you won! So whats the argument! Stop dwelling on trivialities!
Go home and restrategize. Come back and win.
Now I agree that "He who cannot bear the pain of election loss does not deserve the joy of election victory".
