Nayah and the rest of some Cameroonians support a dictator like Paul Biya--that he can govern and rule them for life as long as he has sound economic policies like Gadhafi and gives Cameroonians a bag of rice and money when they get married. This is despite the fact that they are denied their basic liberties and freedom, and cannot have a new person govern them.

There is no longer a term limit in Cameroon, and each term is seven years long. So Paul Biya will be there for at least another seven years and rig the next elections, giving him another seven years. That bastard has been ruling Cameroon since 1982 and is 78 years old. The way some Africans reason, boy I tell ya.

What is your point? Did Cameroon not have a constitution? The Cameroonian people elected their parliament who chose to eliminate the term limits for Biya. Did the Cameroonian people not elect these same people, from the same parties, again?

So obviously the Cameroonian people dont care. Just like the Nigerian people dont care.

In Nigeria, corruption roots in local governments
At a crowded local market near an army barracks, Adeniji made no promises of improving services when speaking to elders there. His entourage passed out gift bags filled with notebooks and unmarked boxes. Others received shirts and caps bearing his image.

"We will vote for ACN this Saturday," market leader Jokotade Logun Tairat promised after hearing Adeniji describe the voting process in her sweltering, dark office.

On Saturday, voters waited on one rubbish strewn dirt road in Lagos Island, the commercial hub of the city, waiting to vote amid water-filled potholes. Nearly all said they voted for ACN and seemed content with the party.

"ACN is doing this democracy well well," said Risikat Jinadu, 63. "They are trying."

Still, the run-up to Saturday's election remains likely the only contact many in the Lagos public will have with their local leaders. Surveys by the Orderly Society Trust suggest more than half of the nation can name at the most one or two of those leaders, if any at all.

Congrats Paul - it must be great being a US backed dictator - you can rule for decades and no-one will disturb you as long as you keep digging your country deeper and deeper into an IMF and World bank loan grave.

Here is a list of some of the world's worst dictators which are backed by the US and guess what Paul is no 1 on the list:

TAKE ACTIONChange.org|Get Widget|Start an Online Petition Embattled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, whose regime has received billions in U.S. aid, has been in the global media spotlight of late. He's long been “our bastard,” but he's not alone.

Let's take a look at the other dictators from around the planet who are fortunate enough to be on Uncle Sam's good side.

1. Paul Biya, Cameroon

Biya has ruled Cameroon since winning an “election” in 1983. He was the only candidate, and did pretty well, getting 99 percent of the vote.

According to the country's Wikipedia entry, “The United States and Cameroon work together in the United Nations and a number of other multilateral organizations. While in the UN Security Council in 2002, Cameroon worked closely with the United States on a number of initiatives. The U.S. government continues to provide substantial funding for international financial institutions, such as the World Bank, IMF, and African Development Bank, that provide financial and other assistance to Cameroon.”

Amnesty International details unlawful executions, journalists being thrown in jail and a host of other nasty business.

As part of a strategy to stifle opposition, the authorities perpetrated or condoned human rights violations including arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions and restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. Human rights defenders and journalists were harassed and threatened. Men and women were detained because of their sexual orientation.

What do you mean that the Nigerian people don't care. When Obasanjo even proposed the idea of allowing the president to serve for a third term, he was faced with heavy criticism and pressure from opposing groups, many of whom said that there would be an all out assault if he dared do it. He eventually bowed to the pressure.

Cameroonians, on the other hand, seem to have no problem with the presidency having no term limits. Nayah said that as long as the president is giving them money and fixing the country, he can rule them for life.

My point is that Cameroonians are more like, as someone said earlier, Ca-mooron-ians. They should have raised serious hell.

The people of Cameroon have willingly decided.

Why does it bother Nigerians so much. They will sort themselves out or ask for help if they need it.

Did you read the quotes from the article? Nigerians dont even know who they are electing into office!

They are merely content with voting and living in a "democracy", apparently it makes them feel on-par.

Nigeria is run just like Russia, except at least Putin improves his country to an extent.

Every year the same parties win all the elections everywhere in the country, they all steal the money, and nobody holds them accountable.

Im amazed that some nigerians actually think we  are better off than camerounians under biya, what is the difference between cameroun's form of dictatorship and nigeria's? simple - cameroun has had  one tyrant ruling over them for decades while nigeria rotates its own tyrants, as a matter of fact we've improved because now we get to elect our own tyrants who continue to degrade, exploit and abuse us but no matter how badly they treat us we always forgive them and elect another set every 4 years, at least now we can elect tyrants from different ethnic groups unlike before when we were stuck with tyrants from the north only - now thats what i call democracy grin

THE WORST DEMOCRACY IS BETTER THAN DICTATORSHIP!

how did you work that out?

lets see nigeria has been operating a so called democracy since 1999 and yet the standard of living of its citizens continues to decline year after year.

the latest goodies in store for nigerians is the removal of the fuel subsidy which will reduce most already impoverished nigerians to near destituion and yet to you the worst democracy is better than dictatorship.

so  you think just becuase they allow you to vote in a new set of theives every 4 years you are better off than a people who live under one repressive rule for decades.

My dislike of Biya has nothing to do with his lengthy tenure in office but more to do with the fact that he has done nothing to improve the standard of living of the camerounian people, he recently went on a shopping spree with that masquerade looking wife of his and spent an eye watering 800,000 euro whilst in france - and yet the majority of camerounians live like nigerians in grim poverty. no wonder so many of them escaped to a better life in libya (just like many nigerians).

One Nigerian man in a video I saw, said he made more money in one year working in libya, than he could make in 5 years in nigeria. Of course, at the time, he had just been robbed by the rebels of all his things because he was a mercenary.

keep quiet. I would rather have elections in which a new leader is elected every four years (eight year max for relections) than have one person rule me for life. At least you stand a better chance at electing a good leader and someone with new ideas than have some grandfather with old ideas rule you since 1982, as in Cameroon, or since 1969, as in Libya.

We know who we elect, and although our democracy is not perfect in Nigeria, it is far better than Cameroon, where the president and his controlling party control every darn thing, including amending the Cameroonian Constitution to remove term limits for presidents.

Biya is an absolute tragedy! Hes 10 years older than Gaddaffi was! He is going to turn Cameroon into another Libya.  The difference is he has not got 1% of Gaddaffis courage he will just leave with hundreds of Millions of Dollars and spend the rest of his life living in luxury in Geneva  cry cry

Biya is a french puppet. Look at his wife! He doesnt even like black women.

We may support ghaddafi, but we know he wasnt an angel, he was however an anti-imperialist who turned Libya into an economic success story on the continent. If Libya was so bad, how come so many Westerners lived there eh?

Its interesting because the more articles you read, you realize the only reason the insurrection was able to happen, was because Ghaddafi was beginning to offer his people more freedoms. If you really read the early reports, you would know the protesters were being allowed to protest, but they were becoming very destructive. Beyond the level the London riots reached, and you saw how british police responded to that.

Don't be naive about international politics. If Gaddafi made himself a slave of the west they would help him suppress the rebels like they helped Bahrain. After all the rebels were trained and sponsored by the West. Besides the main accuser in the Gaddafi regime Musa Kusa had all his offenses writen off once he changed camp

As long as any African country is bowing down to her slave masters the country's leadership can go on forever. Until we realize that regime change is tyranny and the west cannot be bothered if Africans are liberated or not we would continue in our current slavery.

Africa is in slavery, the slave masters have chosen some of their slaves to rule over their brothers. Just check who the Nigerian government officials report to in wikileaks and you would understand who is ruling us. Paul Biya would continue to rule the people until they wake up and once his people reject him the slave masters would dump him. That's the game that's our current international politics.
