So Gowon recently celebrated his birthday after rumour went around that he passed away. I have no love for Gowon, as far as Im concerned he is a war criminal

However, nobody lasts forever. Gowon should answer these three questions while he is still alive, for the sake of history and posterity

1. Why did Gowon break the agreement he signed with Ojukwu in front of the then President of Ghana, General Joe Ankrah, at Aburi, Ghana? Breaking that agree was what caused the civil war

2. Why did Gowon abolish Regionalism? When Gowon took over after the death of Ironsi, he met a Nigeria composed of 4 Regions. Yet Gowon enacted Decree 14 in May of 1967 which abolished all 4 Regions, and created 12 States to replace them. Subsequent military rulers that came after Gowon kept dividing those 12 states until we got to 36.

3. Why did Gowon remove resource control, fiscal federalism, and turn Nigeria into a unitary state? After Gowon had abolished Nigeria's 4 Regions and created 12 states with decree 14, he immediately promulgated decree 15 which removed sections 164 and 141 of the Nigerian constitution which gave the Regions control of their resources and fiscal responsibility. This made the federal government controller of all resources and the the ones who paid the states

He divided the country into states to pull the carpet under Ojukwus feet, he wanted the minority groups of Cross River, Rivers, Delta to antagonise Biafra by given them a sense of belonging, it's simple politics, divide and rule or conquer...

I expected you to ask why he didn't bother to conduct a referendum to find out from the SE if they wanted to stay or not.
