The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated a vehicle assembly plant, a joint venture between the Lagos State Government and the Chinese automobile company CIG Motors, with 2000 vehicles expected to hit the street soon.

The assembly plant, situated along WEMPCO Road in Ogba, Lagos, was unveiled on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, marking a pivotal moment two years after both partners inked the agreement for its construction.

The state-of-the-art facility will be jointly operated by the Lagos State Government and its Chinese partner to produce a wide array of brand-new cars, transforming the automotive landscape in Lagos.

However, before the grand inauguration, the plant had already assembled 2,000 brand-new GAC vehicles, underscoring its potential. The facility, in its first phase, is designed to assemble 5,000 new vehicles annually while simultaneously creating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of international partnerships coupled with local talent, describing it as a “promising synergy”. This development stands as a testament to the commitment of the Lagos government to fostering job creation, skill development, wealth generation, and entrepreneurial prospects. In his words, “The milestone is not merely a numeric achievement; it’s an epitome of multi-sectoral progress that stands to benefit Lagosians.”

We need to source our iron ore from Nigeria, and use our raw materials for the parts of these cars, this is one way to boost our balance of trade, into positive. The price should be affordable too.
