1. how are they able to build so many houses without the knowledge of the government?

2. who are the "many of them" that know that those houses will be demolished and how do they know that the houses will be demolished?

3. "sheer stupidity" in what sense?

It takes nothing to go to LASG office in charge of lands and buildings in Alausa to find out if a land is okay to buy and build on.. It's simple due dilligence most land buyers neglect.

Lagos is not like any other State where people can build all sort of things indiscriminately.. a large part of Lagos is on water and the water drainage channels must be open at all times to avoid flood and other drainage related disasters.. only some parts of the mainland are on solid lands.

The illiterate Igbo spare parts traders are the ones falling victims to this scam from illegal land dealers.. Those that said "education is the best legacy" actually know what they are saying.

It takes an educated person to know the dangers of building on waterways and canals.

Most dumbest and dullest commissioner ever. Illiterate commissioner forming woke.

Do your work and stop showing people nonsense. Even if you reduced all the buildings in Lagos to smithereens, heaven won't fall, so go on with your unprofessional method of tackling problems.

So people should be allowed to build anywhere thereby blocking drainage paths? You people are the same Lagos night bus arrivΓ©es that would turn round to say Lagos is dirty, flooding or was not properly planned, etc? How professional do you want the Commissioner to become if hardened criminals continue to defy the law by putting up illegal structures everywhere so as to boast that they have mansions in Lekki or Festac? In saner climes, many of these criminal developers would be serving jail sentences! cool cool

Foolish people. They will still go behind and collect bribe only to start making noise later.

Scammers decieving themselves. Anyone still buying land or building houses in this hostile and toxic environment must be mad.
This is part of the problem. Why will the developers go behind to give bribe even when solicited for?

Well there are bribe takers and bribe givers. People do all sort of things for money when desperate.

Government marks building. Developers see it as call to go and settle. So they settle and the authorities look the other way.

When you eventually have someone who wants to enforce compliance, they get attacked by the people and also by their colleagues and ogas within the system whose palms have been greased.

So they abandon the compliance and look the other way too. Then other developers see that there is no consequence, so they gain confidence to continue to patronise their cronnies within the system.

Its a warped system. The only way out is to establish compliance no matter what. Enforce penalties and increase deterrent.

Then most developers too will fall in line, when they see that there is no alternative than do it right

Alot, as in a huge lot of buyers are from the abroad. They leave all checks for the Realtor that's only in it for the commission. Some don't even see the property on person before wiring money down.

Millions gone to waste I don't understand how any sane person will embark on this type of project without first getting the necessary approval or maybe the developer met the wrong govt officials.

Authorities from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources have issued a cease-work directive to a developer located along System 156, behind Victoria Crest Estate II in the Lekki region of the state.

The directive was issued due to the developer's unauthorised activities, including illegal sand filling of the channel which was carried out without obtaining the necessary approval from the state authorities.

The Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared photos on his social media handle to make this known on Friday, December 1.

He wrote:
I'm indeed curious why LASG isn't suing this so called developers. Stoping them from working isn't just enough, a message needs to be pass...

Demolition alone is not enough.. Lagos State House of Assembly should enact laws to jail developers and owners of these illigal structures for at least 10 years.

Take back Lagos!

Send these fo0ls packing.

Really shocking Lagos allowed this dangerous impunity to go on for so long. No enduring institutional integrity in Nigeria.

All we have is gra-gra , occasionally and usually with change of administrative leaders, that lack of institutional integrity will compromise eventually.

There is simply no way thing could have gotten this bad had the relevant agencies been doing their jobs diligently, conscientiously and professionally day in and day out,
every month and every year.

Well said. Very sensible comment.

The Commissioner need to be fired. He has just proven he is not capable of enforcing the rules and regulations. How else can all this happen and only now he is taking action?.... warning action? Are there no consequences for such violations? I don't blame the developers...

In the country where I reside in Europe, there is a national planning board.Even when the government needs to construct building, roads, park, hospital etc,the government still applies and get approval from this statutory authority. They sometimes refuse planning permission for government's intended construction.

So you can imagine where government is subject to it's own board,NO individual can ever build without permission. Even before permission is granted, there is a period where members of the public provide input and declare reasons why the application should not be granted.Their views are considered before approval.
