They should not worry, developers from the east will give everybody scholarships.

You think that this is only affecting Eastern and South South universities

It is going to affect your region's universities. And it is not because of tribe, it is because at the end of the day, universities compete on a global scale, and they need money to compete better.

We know the cost of running the schools have increased significantly but the university management should think outside the box for ways to generate more revenue. It's not in every case that they will tax the students every time they need money

Like what?

Set up business that would fail because 'people are poor'

Seek for donations from wealthy alumni.? Yes it helps..but only to a point. A rich man can make a donation of 10 million naira to any university. Whether he is able to make that donation every year for the next ten years is another matter...plus the 10 million would over time not be able to meet university needs.

Sadly...and I say this as the papa of future university students...fees would have to go up eventually. Or your APC government can tell Nigerians to pay half their annual income in tax every year...like they do in Denmark...in return for free education.

Businesses don't fail because people are poor, businesses fail mostly because they're badly run.
It's not always about party politics and I'm not going to go into that.
A lot of these institutions have large expanses of land that can be converted into various forms of agricultural endeavours. There are spaces for event centres. They can solicit for endowment funds to build amusement parks, zoos, libraries that can yield revenues on seasonal and daily basis. Almost every faculty can come up with something that can put money into the university account, while the faculty itself takes a percentage. Businesses that are targeted at the general community, not just it's students. It's mostly about long term planning and vision.
If you increase the school fees now without a plan for the future, tomorrow when "dollar" or "petrol" goes up you'll still find yourself wanting to increase again.
Little wonder we produce graduates in droves without entrepreneurial drive, because even the schools teaching the students know nothing beyond the textbooks they read from verbatim.

Anyway, I know you are an APC supporter. You are ashamed to say it.

Have a good day. A pox on APC and PDP forever.

The fee increment for a session is not much to be realistic, even if they didn't have to pay anything, some people won't still be able to afford being in that level of schooling with other expected expenses.

How much do most of these students spend on buying phones , hair, approaching lecturers for sorting and other stuff etc?

I attended a federal university and I can tell you that u university education in Nigeria is about the cheapest in the world.

The truth is education is almost free in federal universities in Nigeria, I believe the protest is very unnecessary.

The student leadership should dialouge with the school authority and vice versa.

All that is true, but all that takes time...hence fees.

The sad thing is, universities are expensive. That was brought home when in 2013, when the government had a lot of money, they still did not have the money needed to pay ASUU demands as per 2009 agreement.

That was when anyone who was listening would have had the reality hit them hard

The truth is, at the end of the day, unless funding is found...government unis are going to lose to the private unis. And government unis are where most of the poor go to. And it is the poor who would suffer at the end. So, fees.

Endowments, business, etc can only take you as far as x. Foreign unis have all that....and still have high enouf fees.

Moderators Tuition is still free....it is other fees that were increased.

Nairaland ops, moderators make una de read.

The heading is even grammatically wrong.... you can't say " Tuition Fees" it is "Tuition Fee" Tuition is a fee amongst the school fees

Change the heading to School Fees

Tuition is free in Federal Universities right from beginning of Nigeria to date

I wonder why this woman is still in office after all her atrocities. It's as if she only came to increase fees in the school. If I'm not mistaken, that's like the 3rd time she's increased fees in her 5 years tenure as VC.
