It was GSK now P&G yet agbadorians still doing their what they are good at

The reason GSK and P&G are leaving the country try is because they cannot compete. There are Nigerian or Chinese companies manufacturing or supplying the same products at cheaper prices.

Panadol is the bread and butter of GSK, every Dick and Harry manufactures paracetamol at a cheaper price point than GSK’s panadol.

P&G sell pampas. There are multiple cheaper alternatives in the diaper sector. E.g dry love, Molfix, Huggies. I am sure if you did a market survey you will find P&G products were the most expensive.

We have problems in Nigeria but Sometimes the reason a company leaves is simply because it has lost market share and cannot compete. Nothing more nothing less.

wirinet:

No country can develop without foreign investment (I am not talking about portfolio investments). China kickstarted its economic recovery with foreign direct investment. The UK economy is feeling the economic impact of EU companies that left as a consequence of brexit.
Foreign direct investments not only brings in badly needed capital, but also bring with it highly needed technology and skills. It is how the government manages the foreign investments that will determine its long term benefits. A proactive government would make sure that the foreign investors transfer technology to the country, and train our people on the technology and skills to take over after a few years or decades. But Nigerian politicians being blind apart from being greedy have no plan or strategy.
China made sure any company that operates in China shares its technology and trains local people. After a few years Chinese starts making those same products.

It's a pity that after more than 60 years of oil exploration and production, Nigeria still depend on foreigners to prospect and mine crude, we still depend on foreigners to repair and maintain refineries build by foreigners 50 years ago. Shame.

A good observations and analysis!

Free 1m to over 200m Nigerians. They are still struggling to give 35k monthly to just 800k families over 6 months.

And free raw material, some imported with scarce dollars . Some of you Nigerians are just dence, that is why someone like Obi could sell you such silly ideas so successfully without shame because he was talking to idiots.

Na sarcasm!

Then develop your country by yourself.
Stop travelling all over the world disturbing people doing their businesses comfortably.
Are they telling you that without Nigeria they cannot exist.

It is this kind of useless talk we used to hear in the late 90's and early 2000's about the oil sector that, and I quote, 'Shell cannot do without Nigeria. If they leave Nigeria, they will collapse...'

They have since left and their business continues to boom.
But where is the NNPC and the oil business in Nigeria today.
Production down, not anywhere near our quota for years.
Refining, non existent.
Gas, struggling to survive.
Sales of our crude, here today, floating ships on the ocean with unsold cargoes tomorrow.

Instead of them to sit their asses down in humility and figure out how to sort themselves out they will be making noise all over with useless pride in one hand and rampaging poverty in the other.

I got your point but the investors we need now are the one that will be ready to use our resources to create their own product. Let the research and setup lab to research and adopt our raw materials or we develop it ourselves. And if they aren't coming, we should wake up to our responsibility to develop our country and industries by ourselves.

The company thought things would look up with a new government once Buhari was out of the way.

However, Tinubu has fallen short of expectations.

The elephants in the room are the $7b demand the CBN is yet to clear.

The other is the CBN refusal to fight inflation with gusto by increasing interest rates and the statement that inflation would hover around 21.4% next year. This was the joke of the century.

Government needs to slash company tax to 15% or less. This will drive investment in Nigeria and boost economic growth.

To clear the $7b, the government would need an IMF bailout. However, the IMF won't lend the nation the cash with the CBN's pro inflationary interest rates. It would demand the issue addressed.

It would also demand cuts in the size of the civil service, which would trim government spending. It would also demand the deregulation of the petrol and electricity prices which would further cut government spending. They would also demand liberalization of imports

Many of these proposals are dead on arrival, especially the sacking of civil servants and deregulation of electricity and petrol prices.

Anyways, P&G exit from the country is not a death sentence. Many Nigerian owned companies are taking over the landscape, able to thrive in the harsh conditions of doing business in Nigeria. We have brands such Biggie and Viva taking over the landscape.

Nevertheless, it would be great if P&& stayed.

What does tribe have to do with it? I don't even vote.

It is always tribe with people kike you. If someone supports Tinubu, he must be Yoruba. Do you know many Yoruba voted for Peter Obi? 2 of my first cousins voted for Obi and feel he was robbed. Many others would have but I did not ask.

Yorubas did not even like OBJ. Even Ribadu lost the presidential elections in 2011 in the Southwest despite Tinubu endorsing him.

What I wrote did not even praise Tinubu. If what I wrote was scored, Tinubu would score 4 over 10.

You people and tribe!

From frying pan to fire.
Imagine Pampers, Always, Oral, Ariel, Ambi-pur, safeguard, Olay & Gillette now to be imported.
Prices will skyrocket because third-party distributors will milk Nigerians.

I haven't seen or read anywhere about any economic policies or mitigants to encourage these companies to stay put.
Rather it's the padded pockgets and kickbacks they are after.

It isn't good but it can become an opportunity for others. Their absence should spur someone to fill the vacuum, a $50million net sales is decent for a manufacturer with big dreams and plans to expand.

They have equipment already in Nigeria and a manufacturing plant someone who has a decent plan can seek to acquire that. The biggest issue for Nigerian investors is actually financing because the foreign companies seek to repatriate their profits while a local owner doesn't care as much for that.
Production in Nigeria is too expensive. This companies are front for importation business. Running a company in Nigeria without being in control of its materials outside the country is a huge responsibility.
When the foreign ingredient is out from it, we get to feel the full load. I think this is what we are witnessing with product whose local factory left the country.
