Blackberry is a smartphone right? So why in the name of technology are our Service providers ripping us off. In summary, i pay N1,300 on my MTN for 250mb (1,000, on GLO (250mb) Etisalat (100mb) and Airtel (100mb)for data bundle on my smartphone while i require N1,400 (for GLO BIS) to get a complete internet package on my Blackberry worth 1.5GB. My point is we'are all aware of the mega compression Blackberry servers provide resulting in the average Blackberry user barely going pass 600mb (with some semi-intense downloads) in comparison to lets say an Android phone which after a few download we are back to zilch. So why do our providers provide more for blackberry and less for data hungry platforms at almost the same price? Can some enlighten me?

May God bless you Zsch for this thread, I don't know why the providers cannot give us enough data for those of us using other smartphones like android etc
My phone consumes data like petrol. I wish Airtel could give me 1Gb for just N1,500

Please, we need good explanation.

@samby38. Thanks. i hope those in'high places' can see this and do something about it.
Re: Blackberry Internet Vs. Smartphone Internet Data by LordReed(m): 5:43pm On Nov 05, 2011
@zsch
Server side compression makes more business sense for data providers especially here in Naija. Your data hungry devices eat up bandwidth quickly and even hog it sometimes so it pays them to give priority to those who pay a premium and still don't use it all up.

Until our data networks are well developed we will continue to lag behind in access data. Lets hope that this trend of mobile data access will make it more desirable for businesses to invest in provide more channel access.

It is not everybody on BB that does not use their data allocation I used average of 5Gig data with my BB 8520. If you want to drive data on your BB install sky.fm and listen to cool music different genre also install podcast and download so many podcast you will really enjoy the experience

you seem to be off the point, we'r not concerned whether as a BB user you use more of your allocated data or not. We are blowing it loud that other smartphone should be given much more data allocation for the amount we pay.

do you all know that you can share the internet service on your PC with your phone.
If the PC run on window 7, you can make it a hotsport and you connect to the hotspot via wifi from your phone.

all you need is connectifyer, it's a software.

The foolish network offers 1gb GPRS data packs at less than 300naira per month. No special 'bb' package. 3G services are more expensive though,

BB has better data compression and management than Android or iOS. Plus BB's have a larger market share.

I use an Android device. Here are some tips, when not using data turn it off. Turn on only when you need to go online. Also put off background sync. Use opera for browsing. It reduces data by as much as 70%. Also be careful with youtube clips.

What is the best service for Iphone? Relocating to Nigeria and my iPhone is everything to me in terms of connectivity so i need at least 2GB monthly. Any ideas please? Also any ideas for Ipad data bundles? Any ideas for home office (wireless) with unlimited data?

I have my own business and its mainly run online so I am expecting a big challenge either financially or speed when it comes to data access in Nigeria.

MTN provides some of the best coverage around and their data services are pretty decent baring the occasional hiccup. If you plan to travel a lot within Naija MTN will be your friend however if don't move a lot check your local conditions Etisalat or Glo might offer better services there.
Re: Blackberry Internet Vs. Smartphone Internet Data by Jald007(m): 2:22am On Nov 08, 2011
RIM business model with Blackbery is completely diffErent with how other phones operate with Telecoms providers thereby helping providers with priotised decisions for BB users. It's an arguement that can't be changed. Basic points for telecoms here is you can't have a BB and not subscribe (more business & lesser data compression). Technology used for BB require that it stays online 24/7 (Data compression is still an advantage). Business model for other phones are designed for you to go online whenver you desire (doesn't have to stay online 24/7, but it consume more bandwidth). Who gets ur priority If you are a business man? Bearing in mind that demand for data is far too high for the existing infrastructure. Apple are not far from getting a premimum package like BB #IMO
Re: Blackberry Internet Vs. Smartphone Internet Data by Waleesa: 4:54am On Nov 08, 2011
That's the result of deceptive marketing. They do this because only a small percentage of BB subscribers will actually use anything close to 1Gb.
And it's cheaper for the networks to provide BB Service than their own internet service. With BB, they are simply providing a conduit (pipe) to an already existing infrastructure. They have very little setup/configuration to do. For their own internet, they have considerably more work to do.

Consider that Yahoo and Gmail give each user about 7Gb of free storage space. How many people have used anything close to that? A very small fraction.

You have just said it all, Blackberry has its own Internet service world wide just like thuraya, and its at an unlimited bandwidth, so the telecomms networks take advantage of this give us limit on bandwidth. Other smart phones do not have an independent internet gateway, they have to use that of the available networks which are more expensive because of the type of infrastuctre in use, its the same in the U.K, Blackberry services is always cheaper than that of the network providers (worldwide) infact, the providers can afford to grant all Blackberry users free access to the BB service at even an unlimited bandwidth but for the sake of business that can never happen. Until when other smart phone manufacturers develop their own Internet access, its gonna be like this, And besides using a BB u will understand why it has to be online 24/7. I was a BIG fan of Nokia for a long time and hated BB, but when i actually used a BB, there was a whole new experience altogether, it keeps u connected (at a cheaper rate) and its a perfect tool for business, u can actually make lots of cash if u use it the way its meant to be used.

Plus, yes u can use ur BIS on ur laptop using any network, but that info is classified, to know, it comes at ''good'' cost, Ping me if interested; 31A0ED8B

Please could you point us in the direction for this. When I last checked, they only offered N3000 for the 30-day 1GB data bundle unless that has changed suddenly in the past few days.

Btw we're talking Smartphone, not BB cool
