NERC needs to step up and live up to their responsibilities as these Disco guys are useless when it comes to power supply. They care less about rendering quality service but are interested in bills payment for those who use post-paid metres. NERC needs to tell us how they intend to checkmate Disco and ensure that they only charge for the power supplied and not inflated figures as their usual practices which does not reflect the power they supply.

It is what they pay to compensate the power sector for being made to charge prices below the cost price, and for having a large percentage of customers stealing power.

The problem is, with rising costs, it usually isn't enough

Government does not want to be realistic, and allow the power sector set its prices, because if they did, they would be voted out in 2027, so they sacrifice good economic polices on the altar of political ambition.

Paying that colossal amount for what is barely available or metered is another scam of the magnitude of 2007-2013 subsidy fraud.

Basicend:
Yes.

Number one responsibility of the govt is to ensure that it's citizens are able to afford the basic amenities of life.

There should be a measure of subsidies from the govt on vital sectors like electricity, water, education, health, gas and petrol supplies etc.

That is the way it should be.

The problem is, these subsides are why the sector cannot make enough of a profit to fix things.

Also, budgeting subsides is one thing, whether the subsides can cover the losses made by selling power below production cost, and by produiction cost rising over the year is another thing.

Remember, this is what government is paying for 2024, If cost of gas shoots up this year, the 1.6 trillion might not be enough to cover it. Also, oil prices may drop, and the money may not be there.

Finally, subsides are paid for by tax in developed countries, and are not given to everyone. In Nigeria, we pay for it from oil money, which from the word go is not enough for all of us, plus our tax to gdp is too low to pay for subsides.

what do you mean rising costs

Is there any amount that nigerians aren't paying now?

What people are asking for is commensurate quality before you talk of increase

Govt is not doing us any help in power, we basically power ourselves, this subsidy is a scam

petrol subsidy should never have gone away. Electricity could have easily made way for it.
Today you just see an aluminium cable on pole and booooom, huge subsidy figure. Was power generated and consumed? We don't know for sure because the metering is poor or barely existent. Most painful aspect is what they are subsidizing. Consumption. People leaving bulbs on when it can be off, watching TV and so on.
If power must be subsidized, let it be for industrial and productive uses alone. Residential users can use alternatives sources.

Gas prices can rise, especially with rising oil prices. Also, all gas used in this country for power supply is paid for in dollars...yes, all the gas produced here. (I was angry when I found out four years ago).

Naira is falling in value, which means every day more naira is needed for one dollar

Workers salaries have to be increased as well. Then there is transport costs, debts to banks and creditors, suppliers cost, importing things (which all cost money)....

That's why it is better to allow businesses set their prices. The minute government starts setting prices for business, it would be obliged to pay them money to cover their losses for forcing them to sell at cheap prices.

Subsidy payments has come to stay, it's the best and perfect money syphoning conduit that public office holders can't let go. Even if they astronomically increase electricity tariff today in the name of removing electricity subsidy, they will come up with another subsidy payment on other things.

how many percent of people are getting what you saying

This is the problem of Nigeria today, some would be saying speak for yourself

My point is no matter the cost of electricity people would still pay for it if it's the best

Many of us are still pay hundred of thousands for darkness so maybe they should streamline it that you want quality you get it

Good idea, but petrol subsidy had to go.

It should have gone in 2012, because in 2011, we spent three times what we spent in 2010 on subsidy. And it was going because we were in serious debt, because PIA had been passed, and because we had a very high debt rate....and because if we kept it, we would have defaulted on our debt.

Karma hit Tinubu hard...if he had supported GEJ in 2012 on subsidy removal, by now, we would have been reaping the benefits.

Memo To President Tinubu on the Current Power/ Lights:
Dear President Tinubu,as far as the Power- Generations,
Power- Distribution is concerned, nothing has changed and nothing has improved - since you came to govt over 7- Months ago!
We have said it before - the Power Minister-seems to have his own way of how Nigeria Power of just 4000 Megawatts or at most 5000- MGA will improve but is no show till this moment because the DISCOS are too rigid, very Corrupt and the People who claimed Investment in the Power are not Performing! Power have not improved since then!
So,the best is to- Declared Emergency in Power Sector - by taking over this Sector- Pay Off there Investment and bring in experts like General Electric, etc - that were sidelines during the initial Investment of DISCOS.
-Although,you signed Electricity Power Bills' but how many Individuals and States have keyed into this, because it involves heavy Costs?
- the Power Minister seems not to know that- if Power Problems is solved, that half of Nigerians problems is Solved because, all other Sectors depends on the Power and the Energy.
•Other Sources of Power suggested:
i.Build Dams in Epe Sea- Ocean Waters
ii.Build Dams in Ikorodu Oceans Waters.
iii-.Build Dams in Badagry Oceans Waters, for Chinese can easily do this and the Light all these Dams will generate will be massive!
For now, nothing has changed with the Light- more darkness, everyday!
•Why should Egypt have about 58,000Megawatts of lights, than Nigeria with less than 5000 Megawatts, since Independence in 1960!
Nigeria don't need Subsidies again in Power and so how much has DISCOS invested that everyday- we withnessed Darkness more?
-Can they show us,how many New Transformers were acquired since they took up NEPA? What about Prepaid Meters?
Terrible,disgusting an Embarrassing!

Which one b dis againo ooooooo. The same subsidy you people have removed time and time again by jacking up electricity tariffs?? Now we know subsidy is just a name these bunch of thieves use to steal Nigerians blind

Oga!

No subsidy was totally removed from Electric power..

If it was,you will be paying something very close to the average international rates..

All you unambitious, retrograde Nigerians always looking for good service for cheap cost...

It doesn't work like that..

Go to the civilised world..you'll pay through your nose for public utilities..

And don't give me that crap about the service being optimum for 24hrs..we are coming from a bad place hence we need to "upgrade"..

If the service providers do not invest heavily in their infrastructure, you won't get good service..

And the service providers need a whole lot of money to do that .

It definitely can't be cheap or free as most of you would wish..

It is not about speaking for yourself.
Common sense should tell you that less than 5,000 megawatts is poor for a population of 180 million.
