The Kano State Hisbah Board has confiscated no fewer than 8,600 bottles of beer loaded in a van that came from Kaduna to the state.

The board’s officer in charge of intoxicants, Idris Ibrahim, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday,

Ibrahim said the alcoholic drinks were seized last Thursday at Kwanar Dangora village along Kano-Kaduna Expressway.

He added that operatives of the command had been tracking the vehicle from Kaduna until it came into Kano territory.


“We stopped the vehicle at Kwanar Dangora village and the driver attempted to escape but our operatives apprehended him.

“You know it is illegal to sell and drink beer in Kano State. So, we are going to take the driver to court after taking his statement,” Ibrahim said.

He added that the Hisbah team in charge of intoxicants at the board are waiting for further instructions from the Hisbah management.


Meanwhile, the board’s command also arrested 15 young women during operations in different parts of Kano City.


It was learnt that the arrest of the women who were accused of engaging in prostitution, took place in Hotoro Tishama, Bakin River Verd Sabon Gari, Miyangu Road, Hadejia Road and old Zoo Road motor parks.

The board’s Deputy Commander-General, Dr. Mujahid Aminuddeen, who confirmed the arrest, said some of the suspected prostitutes had been arrested several times and charged to court, but still engaged in the illegal business.

“It is unfortunate that some of these women leave their states and countries and come to Kano where they engage in prostitution and other objectionable behaviour.

“They roam the streets of Kano and do all sorts of things. We are calling on members of the public to continue to report such activities so that we can sanitise the state

“However, some of these girls also need prayers because when you talk with them, you understand that they find themselves in this situation because of hardship,” Aminuddeen said.

According to him, a lot of the girls have engaged in drug abuse which has changed their appearance and affected their mental stability.


“We have to call on parents to pray for their children to be protected from the evils of drug abuse, which leads to other social vices,” he concluded..

Alcohol also causes a lot of health problems, especially liver and heart disease, as well as kidney disease, and has destroyed a lot of homes.

Some American localities are 'dry' meaning you cannot get alcohol there if you want.

Then approach the court and tell the FG to set aside an account that revenue from alcohol will be going into so Kano won't be benefiting from it.

I personally think that the North is entitled to ban alcohol sales, just as Southern states are perfectly entitled to ban herdsmen roaming arounf with cows. That is how federalisim is supposed to work.

Kano does not deserve VAT from alcohol, but the way NIgerian economy is set up, because at the end money is not enough for everyone, all the revenue earned goes into a central pot for sharing.....which is why we have Kano collecting VAT from alcohol. That's why Nigeria needs to be productive, and to rely on more taxation for everyone...so that income from oil would not go to everyone, but to the states that produce it. But you guys don;t want more taxation, and you don;t want subsides on power and petrol gone....so we continue to play the same old game.

Let's get our tax to gdp raised, then maybe states can rely more on taxes, and less on VAT and oyel money.

NO need to divide the country.

At the end, we are a federal republic, and we need to live with the fact that rules differ from place to place. After all, muslims resident in the SE don't go on protests asking for alcohol to be banned in the South east, and christians living in the muslim north don't ask for laws to be passed banning prayer calls every time.

The USA has laws that vary from state to state, county to county. Most counties permit alcohol, a few do not. Most states let you drink alcohol at 18, some at 21. Some US states allow for abortions, some don;t and so on.

And even if we divide....we don't have the cash to survive as a united country right now. How would division help that? It would get worse. A lot worse.

And diviving the country does not solve the problem of a state governor from a state where everyone speaks the same lingo, looting and stealing.
