Opinion Piece: Senator Yayi in the Crosshairs: Navigating Allegations of Project Conversion in Ogun State

On 11th of Jan, 2024, a bombshell article penned by Foundation for Investigative Journalism rocked the cyberspace in Nigeria, the headline left no prisoner, “REVEALED: Gbajabiamila, Yayi, Other Politicians Disguising Government Projects as Personal Donations”. This immediately generated several reactions on Social Media. The allegations were damning as two prominent Lawmakers, Former Speaker of the House Representatives, now Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Senator Representing Ogun West were accused of personalizing FG funded projects in Surulere Federal Constituency and Lagos West Senatorial District respectively.

In similar fashion, and in what looked like a love note to the Senator representing Ogun West, on Wednesday, 14th of February, 2024 a socio-democratic group, Yewa/Awori Youth Network accused the Senator representing Ogun West at the National Assembly, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi of allegedly personalising projects funded by the government. Stressing that the Senator was covertly transforming federal government projects into personal donations. In fact, the process to which the projects were made available to Senator Yayi remains a mystery to the spirit of the Procurement Act. The accusations sent shockwaves through the political landscape, igniting a firestorm of debates and responses on new and traditional media platforms in Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State.

Since then, the issue has evolved into a tangled web of claims and counterclaims, with the Senator's political camp vehemently denying any wrongdoing and the Senator himself coming out to deny the allegations. However, amidst the flurry of statements and articles, one thing remains clear: the imperative to uphold transparency and accountability in governance, especially in the allocation and execution of public projects.

The allegations raised against Senator Yayi shed light on broader concerns surrounding the transparency of government projects and the accountability of elected official, particularly on the country's budget processes and Zonal Intervention Programmes of National Assembly. While representatives have a duty to facilitate development initiatives in their constituencies, they must do so within the confines of ethical and legal standards. A Yoruba saying goes "Wọn pé e ni adin(ole), o n gbe omo eran jo” meaning you are been called a thief yet you are dancing with a stolen goat” Senator Yayi has consistently been accused of doing the same even as a Senator representing Lagos West.

The accusations of disguising federal government projects as personal donations not only erode public trust but also undermine the integrity of the democratic process. It is imperative for citizens to rise above political affiliations and objectively assess the veracity of such claims. Constructive criticism should be welcomed as a catalyst for accountability rather than dismissed as mere political maneuvering.

Claims of federal government projects being tagged after Senator Yayi raise significant questions about Procurement Act compliance. Naming Federal Government Initiatives after your name like the "First Yayi Student Scholarship and Bursary" and "Oloja Yayi" potentially violate procurement Act and potentially indicate budget padding and misrepresentation of public funds. Budget padding and potential contract racketeering, highlighted in the allegations, strike at the core of good governance principles.

As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Yayi wields significant influence over budgetary allocations and expenditure. Thus, there is a pressing need for heightened scrutiny of the budget process and contract award mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure equitable distribution of resources.

Moreover, the recent revelations regarding the intervention handled by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, as opposed to individual legislators, underscore the importance of fact-checking and holding public officials accountable for their actions. Deceptive practices, regardless of their guise, have no place in democratic governance.

Chief Odunaro said on records while explaining the motive for the gesture in a message to his constituents, the chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriations stated that notwithstanding the challenging times the nation is going through every citizen must celebrate at occasion like Christmas and other festivities.

“Since I joined politics and serving in public office as a legislator of over 20 years, it is a thing of joy to reach out to my people in various forms to ensure they enjoy each seasonal celebration on a yearly basis. It is part of my effective representation of my people and by God’s grace this will continue in the years ahead” he stated.
The senator urged his constituents to expect better days in the years ahead as his promise of turning Ogun West Senatorial District to a “small London” in the years ahead is not a joke but an aspiration he is working towards.

However, this was debunked in a newsletter released by Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman/Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity in 6th of Jan, 2024, stated that this intervention was handled by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, not by individual legislators. Such instances undermine public trust and necessitate thorough scrutiny to prevent deception.

Such deceptive practices should not be tolerated by citizens because of political leanings. While representatives can facilitate federal government interventions, they must uphold transparency and honesty.

In the face of such challenges, Ogun State citizens must remain vigilant and discerning. While acknowledging the efforts of their representatives in facilitating development projects, they must also demand transparency and adherence to ethical standards. Political allegiance should not overshadow the pursuit of truth and accountability.

As the saga unfolds, one thing is abundantly clear: the welfare of Ogun State and its people must take precedence over political expediency. By holding elected officials accountable and fostering a culture of transparency, citizens can safeguard the integrity of their democracy and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

Having served as a senator in Lagos, he moved to Ogun State to continue.

Yayi gave many reason to smile in ogun state during this hardship. Am not from ogun state but i idolize him already for what he did. Whether people talk or not many like him needs to do more

This is shameful to say the least. They've been manipulating their minions for a long time with these kind of lies and propaganda.
And the people will continue to abuse the fed government for doing nothing to alleviate their Ebi npiawa azu.

I can some ignorant comments here. Even though it's government projects that he converted to his personal project, what matters is he distributed it to the people in need of it and not the other way round.
So it means this type of projects is what federal government has been awarding but never reached the targeted audience but now that someone decided to do it, it becomes a political which hunt as he is exposing there greediness.
Please allow the guy to continue converting more federal government projects so far he's delivering it the the rightful people.
Others senators that are not converting federal government projects where do they keep it? Was it not in there pocket?? Please Yayi Yewa people needs you to convert More of federal government projects in your name so far you are doing the right thing. And moreover the Anchor of the program even stated it clearly that this is Federal government, APC program. So what's the fuse all about??

But the useless journalist fails to investigate others that are not converting federal government projects in their names and still failed to deliver the purported federal government projects to their people on behalf of the federal government.

All I see here is some bad elements who are not happy at the rate by which Senator Yayi is moving paying the Media to come online to talk trash about him.

Their mission is dead on arrival.

SENATOR SOLOMON OLAMILEKAN ADEOLA Is here to stay. No shaking No amount of bad mouthing can stop Yewa people from standing firm with him.

Now it is clear and save to say that Other Senators that have been representing Us before him kept all these to themselves and their families all alone.

Fuuny and mumu people.

How many senators have carried out projects in their constituents region.

You guys are lucky to even have a project wether FG funded or personal funded.

They stole and use the money to develop their constituency, and you are complaining. Other senators are coveting the allocation given to them for developmental purpose.

Ogun State people use this to dance and enjoy your project.

The forms were shared on an open field irrespective of who you are.

Politicians tried to hijacked the process but they were shun and told to go away.
Initially when the forms were brought to my local government, the local government chairman hijacked it and shared the forms amongst his loyalists and his political allies.
The chairman of artisan in my local make a video calling him out, the video was posted on Facebook and Senator Yayi gets to see it. So he nullified it and order for resharing of the forms.
3,000 forms were shared in my local government alone. Very transparent

You go explain tire because no evidence. We knew those who are behind this I urge them to keep writing and let the guy keep working. Someone is building infrastructures (20 classrooms in major public schools and streets roads) .You are here shouting conversion of government projects to personal. I dare this writer to go and verify those projects and you will see on the signboard of contract that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA was the one who award it.The guy put his name as facilitator. This is the handwork of selfish and greedy politicians who were shocked the guy has gained momentum and changed the narrative. Someone who has donated over 70 transformers. If others are doing this too at least the masses won't be complaining awon didirin eda.

Yayi is trying.. those throwing stones at him are destructive critics .

Just advise him to let his constituents understand that he facilitated those projects from FG to them not that it came directly from him.

And his constituents will still appreciate him for fulfilling the sincerity of purpose of those projects.

When we read let us do so with understanding. The main writer is only enlightening people on who funds the project and the ethics of ensuring that FG projects are well projected to people as so. It is doing the right thing for the wrong reason is the scope of the writer. Which is the same for GBAJA of Surulere. That one will even still change Surulere to his ancestral name. "GBAJA LGA". Lol.
