President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, is planning to set up an oil trading firm that would be based in London as part of strategies to help run crude and product supply for his new refinery in Lagos, Nigeria.

This, according to six sources familiar with the matter, who told Reuters on Tuesday that, “the giant 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery is set to redraw global oil and fuel flows and the trading community is closely watching the way it will operate.”

Punch Online reports that Dangote unveiled the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos on May 22, 2023.

The move, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday would reduce the role of the world’s biggest trading firms, which have been negotiating for months to provide the refinery with financing and crude oil in exchange for products exports.

Dangote, whose wealth is estimated by Forbes at $12.7bn, did not reply to several comment Reuters requests as of the time of filing this report.

BP, Trafigura and Vitol among others have met Dangote in Lagos and London in recent weeks to offer loans for the some $3bn in working capital the refinery needs to buy large amounts of crude, trading sources told Reuters.

The traders asked the refinery to repay loans with fuel exports but so far, they have signed no deals as Dangote worries they would reduce his control of the project and potentially his profit, the sources said.

Dangote has also met state-backed firms in his search for cash and crude.

“He is going to try and do it himself,” an industry source told Reuters.

Sources told Reuters the new trading team will be led by ex-Essar trader, Radha Mohan.

Mohan joined Dangote in 2021 as director of international supply and trading, according to his Linkedin profile.

Two sources said the team was in the process of hiring two new traders.

Reuters report further stated that “the Lagos refinery took nearly a decade to complete and it came in at a cost of $20bn, some $6bn over budget.

“The plant has refined around 8m barrels of oil between January and February and will take months to get to full capacity.

“So far, Vitol has prepaid for some product cargoes to help the refinery buy crude, while Trafigura has swapped some crude oil in exchange for future fuel cargoes, sources with knowledge said. Geneva-based Vitol and Trafigura declined to comment.”

Crude oil from the US, trading firm in London. I am waiting to see how these deals will make Dangote fuel cheap for Nigerians.

Dangote Refinery will be considered to have made fuel cheap in Nigeria if the refinery reduces the price below ₦150 per litre, just as Naira will be considered appreciated when it is less than 216 per dollar.

If Dangote refinery functions and fuel price becomes ₦200 or ₦150 per litre in Nigeria, saying that the refinery has made fuel cheap will be wrong. I say this because fuel price was below ₦150 per litre in the year 2013 when some people started saying that the refinery will reduce fuel price in Nigeria.

If Tinubu's administration makes Naira 300 or 220 per Dollar, saying that Tinubu has improved the economy will be wrong. I say this because Naira was 216 per Dollar when Tinubu said the Dollar rate was too high.

This refinery is like a mirage. We have we have secured 5 million barrels of crude for refining and you expect to see dangote patrol in the next one week but one month will pass and not even a cup of refined product will be seen in the market

Any project Nigerian politicians use for bragging rights or to attain praises from their followers always encounters one issue or the other. This refinery should start working once and for all. I do hope it helps reduce fuel importation in Nigeria. But this scenario whereby Dangote is hell bent on exporting......hmmm

After all the noise. When you tell your fellow Nigerians that Dangote refinery is never a savior but is a problem by itself, they won't believe and will call you all sorts of names.

Everything about this refinery is a disaster. From lying about its completion to buying CBN's dollars at super-cheap rates to insisting on selling oil in dollars. The last time, Dangote was importing crude from the US to refine. Now, it's opening an office in London to trade the crude. Who will it pay taxes to? Nigeria? The UK?

Dangote never pays taxes, but if he does, he will give more to the UK.

And what is the effect of this madness of the naira? Is he not further dollarizing the naira or do we say, pounding it? Yep, he is pounding it, doggy style.

In the next few years, when the exchange rate begins going up again, the government will do nothing about him and will begin chasing crypto exchanges, AbokiFX, and Binance around.

Hmm, clearly the market isn't Nigeria or nigerians. He built a refinery in Nigeria with local loans and government connections knowing fully well it will gain massive reports around d world to buying crude from US and seeking loans from around the world for what exactly? This dude is only interested in the loans he could use the refinery to get hopefully the loans balances itself out with time and buying crude oil of 8 m barrels from US is for more credibility to source loans. Dangote knows the refinery will fail now he is trying to recoup his investment to transfers the loss to any mugu wey loan am

Good move

But most of us are more interested in seeing the impact of finally having a working refinery. Because up till now we aren't seeing any effect. Cost of petrol is still high, exchange rate is still high

I don't know much about Oil trading and crude swap but Alhaji should remember Oga $Fote experience with Diesel as result of Price changes ...Abeg o he should do proper risk analysis and not be blinded by juicy deals ...Me I don't understand the usefulness of our long term relationship with Saudi Arabia if we can't leverage on them ... I have a feeling there's a trap that's why ex President Buhari was encourage to mortgage our crude oil for $3billion and I am sure the price capped hasn't come down.

ITS FUNNY HOW FUNDING FOR THIS REFINERY CAME FROM OUR SUBSIDIZED DOLLARS FROM EMEFIELE.

BUT SINCE COMPLETION, ITS CRUDE FROM AMERICA,TRADING IN LONDON, ACCOUNTS IN SINGAPORE.

WHERE WERE THESE PEOPLE WHEN YOU NEEDED THE FUNDS TO BUILD THE REFINERY ?

WHY DIDNT YOU BORROW THE 17 BILLION FROM THEM TO BUILD THE REFINERY ?

NOW THAT NIGERIA HAS BEEN EXPLOITED FOR FUNDS,ITS TIME TO TAKE THE BUSINESS ABROAD.
