The wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Rev (Mrs) Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, has footed the hospital bills of the two traders who suffered severe electrocution injuries in Calabar last Saturday.

Rev. (Mrs) Otu who visited the victims, Chijioke Udoji and Uzoma Anthony, at the Calabar General Hospital on Thursday, was accompanied by Hon. Effiong Ekarika, lawmaker representing Calabar South I State Constituency in the Cross River State State Assembly.

The Wife of the Governor, who was represented by one of her aides, Dr (Mrs) Inyang Asibong, said being at the hospital fits into Governor Bassey Otu's "People's First" philosophy, and coming to the assistance of those impacted by avoidable situations.

Mr Chijioke Udoji and Uzoma Anthony, traders at Chamley in Calabar South, cheated death by the whiskers after they were severely electrocuted on Saturday evening when an electric high tension pole sparked and went up in flames and as they tried to salvage their wares from their shops.

Speaking at the hospital visit, Dr Asibong quoted the First Lady as saying, “I am here to not only thank God for His divine mercy of sparing your lives in that unfortunate electrical mishap but to assure you that the Government of Cross River State identifies with both of you and your families in this terrible but avoidable circumstances.

“Let your minds be at rest and thankful to God as my office has undertaken all the medical expenses. I wish to also commend all those who put their lives at risk to avert a fatal outcome. I, however, urge the concerned authorities to investigate and see how such an unfortunate situation can be averted in the future.”

Also, Hon. Ekarika supported the initiative of the First Lady with N500,000.

CONVERSEER reports that it took the effort of some men to save the traders from the dangers of the high tension.

I watched the video of the electrocution. The two men were lucky to survive. While one looked motionless, the other was trying to escape the shock till he found himself inside the gutter. Thank God they both survived.
I wish them speedy recovery

Well the video didt show anybody trying to salvage any wares..the wires just dropped on them.. while one passed out outrightly, the other desperately tried to fight off the shock (he showed a very impressive determination to survive)..before he lost control and fell into the drainage.. people just looked on helplessly. A very disturbing video

Big kudos to the first lady and her team

Chai..

It is the responsibility of the State.

The electric power project is a Federal property in the State and the grave event was not the fault of the victims.

The gesture looks so kind because we don't ever expect anything from any tier of the Nigerian government as right!!!

Anyway Madam,

Thanks for the kind gesture.

I'm also wishing the victims, very quick recovery.

High voltage injuries are some of the most bizarre burn injury you can ever see.

Things look normal for some days until the devitalized areas show up.

Electric-execution= electrocution. They were not electrocuted if they survived. Fix the headline, OP.

Trading under high tension cable is like a time bomb waiting to explode. Relevant authorities should always make efforts to sensitize people and place is a high danger alert signs or designate it as a highly hazardous zone.

Is that a problem? are you happy or angry? This simply means Igbos like marrying them too. You always need to see things from other angle too, else, that will be sentimental judgement.

I suspect the land was wet during that period, which is why the other man found it difficult to move out quickly, as the ground also has a high level of induction.
