The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the release of N778,998,500 payment for the 2023/2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebiet who made this disclosure in an interview with newsmen in her office in Uyo, said the amount was initial payments for 48,797 candidates participating in the sub regional examination this year.

She gave the breakdown of the amount to cover NIN registration fee, biometric registration, funds for administrative cost, as well as 50% of the WASSCE fee.

She said that the increase in sundry charges for the examination has raised the yearly payment fee by the State Government from N1 billion - N1.5 billion.

She further noted that the West African School Examination fee hitherto was N18,000 naira, has been increased to N27,000.

“The release of the initial payment by the State Government is to enable the students to participate in the examination, and the Government is expected to pay a balance of over N700,000,000 in due course.”

The Education Boss commended the Governor for remaining committed to the welfare of students despite the apparent economic realities in the country, expressing the belief that students will work hard and justify the huge investments committed by Government to their course.

“You could recall that, very recently the Government had released additional N100 million to cater for bursary of students of Akwa Ibom State origin at various tertiary institutions across the country, while grants ranging from N250,000 - N350,000 had also been given to students with disabilities, starting with tertiary institutions.”

The Education Commissioner hinted that since the commencement of the bursary payment exercise, over 10,000 recipients have benefited from this exercise so far.

Impressive.

Almost 16k per student.

But are there only 48,797 WAEC candidates for this year in the state? If no, how will the poorest ones be identified and made the beneficiaries of this fund?

the igbos does not depend on government to pay their child's expenses,it has never been done and will never be done, there are some kind gestures that degrades the pride and respect of a man and every Igbo family no matter how poor can still afford to pay waec for their child

If they cannot afford WAEC fees, they definitely cannot afford to go to the university

Money he should have used to empower these youth in learning trades, tech and agriculture...
Believe me, school certificate is becoming useless to nowadays youth..
Most of these graduating youths are unemployable...
One came to my place to look for a job, I sensed his application letter was written for him, gave him a clean sheet to rewrite, bro couldn't even start...
No be everybody suppose go school, no be everybody head carry book.

What percentage of the students are in free secondary schools with enough teachers and other staff as well as adequate classrooms and other facilities

Should anyone clap for this in view of the government’s failure to provide free education for all children, if the person is not suffering from the Stalin chicken disease aka Stockholm syndrome?

Soviet leader Josef Stalin ripped the feathers off a live chicken to demonstrate "how easy it is to govern stupid people." Upon plucking its feathers and leaving it bleeding in pain, Stalin threw some grains for it on the ground, it started to feed on them. That's us right now..

Good move,
Encourage trade as well as conventional schools
Nigerians need to learn more trade
Not everyone is a politician or office worker.

This is putting the cart before the horse...

- Why not say "Present a WAEC result with minimum of 5 credit pass" and get a full refund.

- Liase with WAEC to confirm all WAEC results from best to least which the 48,797 can accommodate to do a refund directly into same accounts that paid.

This way, the intelligent ones can borrow or be sponsored with assurance of a payback if they are not capable.
This way there is 100% transparency with zero fraud
This way you make students not loose focus knowing they are in debt if they are sponsored and failed.

Hope they listen.

Since 2007 under Godswill Akpabio, primary, secondary, and WAEC for students in public schools are free. And it's a punishable crime for the administration of government schools to demand any tuition or WAEC fees.

Free pre-tertiary education has been mandatory for 17 years now in Akwa Ibom. Nonnegotiable regardless of who is in power.

There is no any history

Most states have always been paying waec fee for their students for almost 2 decades now, all south west states I can personally confirm

What some rouge governors use to do is they avoid paying immediately and allow multiple years waec fee to pile up then they leave it for their successors to clear as outstanding
