In January of 1967, the then President of Ghana, General Joe Ankrah, hosted the Military leaders of Nigeria at his hill top mansion in Aburi, Ghana. The objective of this meeting was to avert civil war, and put Nigeria on the part of long term peace on prosperity. The previous year has seen coups and counter- coups, massacres, pogroms, riots, ethnic and sectarian violence.

The main antagonists, Lt Col Ojukwu, Military Governor of the Eastern Region, and Lt Col Gowon, presumtive Military head of State. Both men sat down with General Ankrah for two days and reached a 12 point agreement now known as the Aburi agreement, or the Aburi Accord.

The agreement basically restructured the 4 Regions of Nigeria into a confederation of 4 Regions. Not only would each Region control its resources, each would have its own Army, Police, and control its internal security, making the central government weak. The agreement also recognised Gowon as head of state, but in item 8, fobade Gowon from changing the 4 Regional structure of Nigeria unless all 4 Military Governors of the time agreed he should do so. All parties signed the agreement.

However, within weeks of returning to Nigeria, Gowon broke the agreement by announcing that he will be abolishing all 4 Region's, creating 12 new states to replace them, and ending resource control(Decree 14 and 15 of 1967)

Ojukwu responded by declaring Biafra, and civil war followed.

But had Aburi been implemented, had the 4 Region's been allowed to exploit their talents and resources, had the 4 Region's not had an all powerful federal government, had the Region's controlled their internal security, we would not be where we are today. It would have been a better country

Instead, what happened? Gowon took resource control and Regionalism away, created unitary states, the federal government became excessively powerful, everyone abandoned their talents and resources and depended on oil. Poverty and nsecurity steadily got worse

Today Nigeria is world poverty capital, 8th most insecure country on earth, and one of the most corrupt

Nigeria may be the world capital of poverty and headquarters of brokeass niggas worldwide, but to some that’s a position they will gladly accept than the dismemberment of ‘one Nigeria’ that will set the hated ‘competition’ free from their hegemonic control!

With the status-quo, they can have control over all that oyel and gas, which otherwise would have been for a Biafra Republic, and they can disproportionately enrich themselves and their region while at the same time working to undermine Igbo political and economic interests! The fact the then Mid-Western region, that is equally endowed with hydrocarbons, wasn’t part of Biafra doesn’t matter! The key thing was to ensure the hegemonic alliance got control of all that wealth and deny the Igbo the opportunity to use it to develop their region! Events playing out from the late 60s to date have proven this postulation to be spot on!

That’s not very true, we would have been a better country if Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi did not effect the promulgation of the now-infamous "Decree No. 34", which abrogated the country's federal structure into a unitary one that’s still in effect till this day.

Still don't get what you're driving at? Someone had to supervise the hanging, and trust the devious hegemonic schmucks to look for a 'Major Obi' to carry out their murderous agenda! Stands to reason innit?.....Get a 'Major Obi' to 'supervise' the hanging then have your ilk use this to run around shouting 'Igbo killed Saro-Wiwa.....Igbo killed Saro-Wiwa'! It's all part of the divide-and-rule strategy deployed to control the so called south-south/Niger-Delta people and their resources through trying to drive a wedge between them and their Igbo neighbours! Funny how you overlooked the thugs responsible for putting the man on trial and executing him, against widespread international appeals for clemency, while zeroing in on the man the picked to 'supervise' the hanging!

Could you corroborate this claim of yours that Ikemba 'travelled the world for Abacha trying to justify the hanging'!? Assuming, without conceeding, that there's some truth to your assertion, it still takes us back to the issue....and corroborates the assertion that there exists a diabolical plan to set the Igbo and other ethnicities from the old Eastern Region against each other for the economic and political benefit of the evil hegemony and their southern ally!

The then government of the eastern region was still in control of Niger Delta before the coup the only difference is that ojukwu bidding for more resources and power be given to the same region under his control.

Niger Delta was created after the civil war, before they were all together and we know that splitting a region and given it a name brings about division and potential problems

This isnt accurate. The Niger Delta has always cried about marginalization... some part of Niger Delta were part of western region and they fought for regional autonomy resulting in a fourth region BenDel being created.
Other parts of Niger Delta in the Eastern region like the Ijaws too had been crying about marginalization (Isaac Adaka Boro's secession attempt comes to mind). Gowon Attended the meeting at Aburi in good faith and agreed to what Ojuku said but on getting back to Nigeria some traditional leaders from the Niger Delta region met with him like the late Oba Erediawa of Benin who was still a prince then and Obong of calaba met Gowon and explained why it wasn't in their favor for Aburi accord to be followed... so Gowon immediately went ahead to create 12 states (the states were created before the war not after)... this provoked Ojuku who said Gowon refused to honor the Aburi accord

So why didn't Ironsi go ahead and implement the Aburi accord when he came to power?

So you see the matter is more complicated than you think, Aburi accord didn't work because of insincerity on both sides by interpreting the accord differently.
The accord will have to be approved by the supreme military council at its meeting in Benin but Ojukwu refused to attend the meeting to ratify the agreement..... See that you can't just blame Gowon for not implementing the accord

If you start another Aburi nonsense, you will get the same 1967 to 1970 treatment. History keeps repeating itself because those concerned never learn.

This is not Accurate either
You are assuming that there ever was any accord that was "not honored"
Where is the evidence for this? Ojukwu said so?
Did Gowon sign any document? Have you seen it?
Assuming there was an accord how do you know what it contained?
Ojukwu came to the public to.make claims that does not mean it is true

TWO THINGS
1. What exactly was agreed
2. What was the legal status of what was agreed.
1. No one knows because there is no written proof or video evidence just endless explanation from Ojukwu
2.Gowon was not an absolute ruler and could not make any agreement that amounted to a constitutional change without recourse to the Supreme Military Council

In summary what we had was an
Aburi Chat
Aburi Conversation
Or
Aburi MOU with no official record

They could not implement Aburi because they don't want a Nigeria based on justice, fairness and equity, they want 'one Nigeria by force'

It wasn't an Igbo coup. It was a southern Nigeria coup. Those guys were pure revolutionary's who really wanted to change the course of Nigeria due to the Northern Hegemony done by the British who practically handed over Nigeria to the North

I just finished reading "Why we struck" written by Major Adewale Ademoyaga, One of the three leaders of the coup

1. Kaduna Nzegwuo is Delta not even Igbo
2. Major Ademola Ademoyaga.Yoruba from Ogun state
3. Major Ifeajuna was Ibo

Those were the 3 guys that planned the revolution. It was at the time the Nation was at crisis with rioting everywhere and the federal government was about repressing opposition completely.

They wanted a total and complete turnaround of the country and not one region particularly the North ruling over the rest of us

Aburi is in the past you can't bring it back. It is up to this generarion of Nigerians to decide what kind of nation they want. You also like to cling to the past and the reason you believe you can ressurrect Biafra even when it is glaringly impossible.

Up to the youths to decide what country they want? If thst were possible, they would have decided long ago. We are all prisoner of a long failed unworkable British colonial contraption called Nigeria

Those who want Biafra, Oduduwa Republic and Arewa Republic are those who want try something else. The rest are just slaves of an unworkable contraption, that might have worked had the restructuring agreed at Aburi been implemented

Nigeria could not have been restructured at Aburi
Was Aburi a constitutional conference
It was just a conversation full stop
What Mandate or authority did Ojukwu. or Gowon have to change the constitution?
Did any Ijaws,Efiks or Ogoni vote and send Ojukwu to Aburi
Did Yoruba send Gowon to Aburi
None of them had such powers. They simply had a chat and Gowon came back to discuss with the Supreme Military Council

Can Tinubu just wake up, go and discuss with Nnamdi Kanu and come and tell Nigerians that he has agreed to Fendi Accord and Biafra can go?
