Breaking: Northwest group hails Sokoto's return to 'welfarist' governance policy

The Northwest Progressives Forum (NPF) has commended what it described as 'the return of welfarism as a state policy by Sokoto State under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, with the 2024 Ramadan salary bonus for workers and pensioners and others in the State.

A media statement signed by the group's Direcror of Research and Documentation, Sani Wakili at the weekend, noted that "the last time Sokoto experienced welfarist as its governor was during the era of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who made life a lot easier for the state's workforce through prompt payment of salaries and sundry welfare packages for the people of the State regardless of religious affinities".

It would be recalled that in an effort to ensure that Muslims in Sokoto State start this year’s Ramadan Fast with ease, Governor Ahmed Aliyu approved the payment of half salary bonus as Ramadan gift to all civil servants, primary school teachers, local government staff as well as pensioners in the state.

The group further stated that the current administration in Sokoto "has started following the footsteps of welfarism as a state policy and this means the welfare legacies of Wamakko are gradually returning after years of hardship under the PDP".

The group also rejoiced with the people of Sokoto State over the recovery of kidnapped Almajiris and "bringing them back unharmed."

The statement also noted that the Ramadan bonus could be a birthday gift to the "foremost political godfather of Sokoto politics, Senator Wamako, who weeks ago, clocked 71 years.

Unless good leaders come to office to emphasize on developments.

Sokoto State has significant potential to increase revenue from various crops and livestock.

Onions: Sokoto State is known for its onion production and has the potential to further increase yields and quality to meet local demand and for export markets.

Livestock: Livestock farming, particularly cattle, sheep, and goats, is another area with potential for revenue growth. Sokoto State has favorable conditions for livestock rearing, and investment in improved breeding, animal health, and value-added products could enhance revenue streams.

Sorghum and Millet: These grains are staple crops in Nigeria and are cultivated in Sokoto State. Increasing productivity and value addition through processing could boost revenue from these crops.

Rice: With proper irrigation infrastructure and improved farming techniques, rice cultivation can be expanded in Sokoto State, contributing to increased revenue and food security.

Fish Farming: Sokoto State has water bodies suitable for fish farming. Investment in aquaculture could lead to increased revenue from fish production and processing.

Groundnuts: Groundnut cultivation has historical significance in Sokoto State. Improved farming practices and value addition could enhance revenue from groundnut production.

Poultry: Poultry farming, including chicken and eggs production, presents opportunities for revenue generation in Sokoto State. Investment in modern poultry facilities and breeding could increase output and profitability.

Cash Crops: Other cash crops such as sesame, cotton, and hibiscus (zobo) can also be explored for increased revenue generation, depending on market demand and agricultural suitability.

To capitalize on these opportunities, Sokoto State may need to focus on improving agricultural infrastructure, access to finance, extension services, and market linkages. Additionally, promoting agribusiness and value chain development can enhance the overall agricultural sector and contribute to increased revenue.
