Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and his co-defendant, Henry Omole, were brought before the Lagos State High Court on April 8, facing 26-count charges including alleged abuse of office and involvement in a $5.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja high court ordered Emefiele to be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), while Henry Isioma-Omoile was to be detained at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre.

The defense, represented by Mr. A. Labi-Lawal, argued vigorously for bail, presenting 31 affidavits in support of the applications. Labi-Lawal emphasized that the charges were bailable offenses and highlighted Emefiele's willingness to attend court, noting that he was seeking bail on the basis of self-recognition.

The defense also pointed out Emefiele's compliance with previous bail conditions in a separate fraud trial in Abuja and urged the court to consider his status as the former CBN governor.
