Am a sales manager, I work with an international Logistics/supply chain management company, part of the largest Shipping company in the world from Denmark. I like my job but its a close loop reward system, meaning, your salary is stable irrespective of your sales wins.

The job is quite tough and challenging cos you are competing with local logistics company. Our targets are large manufacturing/trading companies who have high volume of import/export.

My background is electrical engineering but i have a Post graduate in Shipping.

That must be Maersk Line. I worked there 2005-2007 as a Sales Team Lead, the experience and foreign training made it a memorable one.

I'm a marketing student in one of the uni in the south east, its good reading through this thread and seeing that marketing profession is a rewarding carreer, I'm perplex at the prospects and I will say its been a good choice considering fact that I always wanted to be an economist or an accountant.

I will like to know the view of the people who are in marketing, on how to start being a top norch marketing executive.
What are the basic steps on how to get started.
Let us tern the forum to a learning forum.

Although i am not a Marketer, i can only share my experience as a Sales Professional/Business Consultant. Being a top notch sales executive requires the understanding of three basic functions:

[li] Presentation skill (Your selling; questioning, prospecting, networking & relationship management skill or how to link 1 & 2 above- bringing the product to the market as a solution that will solve the problem in the market) [/li]

After understanding these, you can now engage in consultative selling; panadol can only be sold to someone with headache and not stomach ache, so you will need to look for headaches to proffer your panadol solutions to, better still you'll need to identify people with headaches, what is the cause of the headaches etc. then talk to the market as someone who has the solution for their headaches.

1. Why did you choose Marketing / Event Management as your profession?
It wasn't my plan to have a career in the hospitality industry (Event Management). I read accounting and I always said I was going to be the best accountant in the country because I'm good in mathematics. But along the line, just like you find yourself blogging about careers and your CV review thing (as an interest), I discovered I had a flare and interest in meeting people. I tapped into this interest.

I like building relationships because when I do, there is nothing I ask of you which is within your reach that you won't give me. From building relationships you can get what you want from people and I apply this to the Marketing aspect of my job

I am an Advertising Consultant,Advertising is also under marketing,Most posters seem to be direct marketers,doing it on one on one to consumers but advertisers communicate to a large number of people at the same time using different media.Radio,TV,Press and outdoor (Not forgetting New media.

Advertising is very interesting,Though media planning and buying sometimes can be monotonous at other times very hectic and tasking.When I worked on Unilever foods Account,It was very challenging and interesting you are not restricted to ad placements,Knorr for instance we had like a woman empowerment campaign tagged KNORR KOMPLIMENTS...We visited Salons and bars in different parts of the State, interviewing women. TEE A was the anchor person who interviewed Ladies and found out from them what reactions they got when they cooked for their families,Do they get and appreciate compliments? etc

Sometimes we do activations for new brands.When I worked on Friesland Foods and Peak choco was introduced into the market,Comedians,Actors and Actresses were in attendance,it was very nice.

Advertising is also about edutainment,Apart from the work aspect,you learn a lot on the job, you get invited to program launch,Events etc.
When I worked on GSK account,For any event my Company then had,GSK supplied the drinks for free,When you have good relationship with Clients and media partners,It goes a long way in building your career.

There is also the satisfaction derived when your advert campaign is successful, That is when your Clients sales increase due to your advert,When Ovaltine came back into the market in 2008,I handled the media plan with my unit head and they had increased sales in every region we advertised in.It was very Satisfying....

In whatever field you find yourself,Do not make it all about money.Building relationships and carrying out your duties well is also very important.There is a Satisfying feeling when the job is well done and every one is happy...Very nice...
