Manchester United Vs Wolves (4 - 1) On Saturday 10th December 2011 by mukina2: 9:36pm On Dec 09, 2011
Manchester United attempt to bounce straight back after the pain of their Champions League exit in midweek, as they host Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.

On the face of it, the game at Old Trafford should be a home 'banker'. United have lost just one of their last 28 Premier League games at Old Trafford (W25 D2 L1) and Wolves have lost their last five away games in a row in the league. But that is not how football works and Sir Alex Ferguson will know he has to lift his players after they failed to get the point they needed in Basel to secure qualification from their Champions League group.

While their performances in Europe may not be up to scratch, United have done well in the Premier League and have only notched more points after 14 games of a domestic campaign in two of the previous 19 seasons. Still five points behind rivals City, they have work to do, but few would bet against them finishing in the top two again come the end of the season.A lot may depend on how long key defender Nemanja Vidic is out for. The Serbian suffered a knee injury against Basel and his presence in the side since their 6-1 capitulation to City has been a stabilising factor. In the Premier League, at least, Newcastle's penalty has been the only goal United have conceded in five games.

But it is at the other end of the pitch that the club are struggling. With Wayne Rooney only managing to score against Otelul Galati since his sending off against Montenegro for England. United have bagged just 11 goals in nine games. At some point, that form will have to improve.

Wolves have hardly been prolific, but they have also enjoyed a decent start as 14 points after 14 games is their best performance in their four Premier League campaigns to date.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy will be fully aware of the task facing him at Old Trafford, although may draw strength from the last match between the sides: a 2-1 win at Molineux last February. Indeed, Wolves have shown a fighting spirit and have recovered the joint-most points (7) from losing positions in the Premier League this season.

With only a few players on the sidelines - defender Richard Stearman is likely to miss the trip to Manchester and Kevin Foley has been ruled out until January with an ankle injury - the likes of Karl Henry, Matthew Jarvis and Kevin Doyle will be keen to take advantage of any United hangover.

Manchester United player to watch: Jonny Evans. Evans will likely be thrown into action again as Vidic's injury saw yet another United defender on the treatment table. Indeed, when Phil Jones and Chris Smalling arrived in the summer many thought that the Irishman may be let go, although he has started eight Premier League games out of 14 to prove that he is still viewed highly by Sir Alex. His versatility has helped him plug the gaps in the Red Devils' defence, but he will need to be at his best as a partner for Rio Ferdinand if he is to keep Wolves at bay.

Wolves player to watch: Steven Fletcher. Fletcher has scored more headed goals than any other Premier League player since the start of 2010-11 (cool and his efforts up front have seen him bag five goals so far this season. The 24-year-old joined Wolves for a huge £6.5 million fee in the summer of 2010, leading many to suggest that he may struggle to repay it. However, his gritty performances (always high on work-rate and commitment) have impressed and, as the club's main goal threat, he is one of the first names on the team-sheet for McCarthy.

Key Battle: Danny Welbeck v Jody Craddock/Roger Johnson. With injuries to Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov, the return of Welbeck to fitness could be a timely boost. United have scored just 11 goals in their last nine matches, despite their impressive striking options, and the Englishman's pace and strength up front could be an important part of their revival. If Mick McCarthy opts to keep Craddock in the side in place of captain Roger Johnson, then Welbeck could find favour when he stretches his legs, but either way he will know he has been in a game at full-time.

Trivia: Wolves have conceded a league-high 63% of their goals in the first half, while Man United have conceded a joint-high 77% in the second half.

Stats: United have kept more clean sheets than any other team in the top division, while Wolves have scored just one goal in their last six visits to Old Trafford.
