I was expecting an answer like this: Mendeleef's has placed H in group 1A along with Alkaline metals but at the same time, it also resembles Halogens of group 7 and also Group 4A.

Jesus Christ! I'm a final year biochemist in Unilag. The earlier posts on here sure have made the future of the average Nigerian biochemist look very bleak! God!
Meanwhile, I've always known Public Health or Lecturing is the only way out in this career line, except one wants to become a second rate analyst in the Quality Control Dept of a Pharmaceutical Co.
I'm still very hopeful to work in the Nutritional line sha. My only regret is having not given myself a reality check years earlier so I could acquire skills/certificates (along with my schooling) that would boost my chances to compete in today's Labour Market.

Hello Everyone,

This week, I featured an Environmental practitioner as the "Professional of The Week"It was a very nice interview, he talked about the profession as well as skills and professional certification such as NISP, NEBOSH, IEMA. Read on and be inspired.

Professional of The Week: An Environmental Engineer

This week, we're featuring an Environmental Engineer as the "Professional of The Week". It was yet another enlightening interview and I encourage every professional or budding professional out there to read on.

Name: Jima Okori
Location (state): Rivers State
Profession: Environmental Engineering

1. Why did you choose Environmental Engineering as your profession?
Well, my dream as a child was to be a pilot and as I grew it changed to Mechanical Engineering. However, while I was undergoing admission into university, complications during the process led me to Industrial Sciences.
After my Undergraduate degree, my interest in engineering was still very much alive and my dad, a Chemical Engineer by profession, advised that Environmental Engineering would be best suited based on my chemistry background. So, I went for a Masters in Environmental Engineering Technology, specialising in Environmental Analysis and Assessment.

Cheers

Oh my!
My old constituency of Chemists!
I dropped my lab coat after youth service and took on IT, never looked back though.

The death of local refineries and it's ancillary industries has helped to kill these two noble professions! sad sad sad
I am hearing that ethanol business is huge now, owing to demands from industries.
Will like to invest there in the nearest future.

Tank 5od for this threa. I m also a biochemist and i finished service last year. Its painful a course as impotant as biochemistry is not accorded its place of honour in dis country. And as dey say, man must wak, hence d need to look the oder directn. I tink msc in public health wudnt b a bad idea. I jst found out dat some universities like uniben and unical in nigeria offer it. Wish all of us d best even as we diversify

Hi nairalanders,
I'm a Biochemist and I dont regret it one bit. There are alot of opportunities for us. Have U guys thought of venturing into RESEARCH? I mean research in Biotechnology - environmental, industrial, agricultural and molecular biotechnology and the functions of a Biochemist in this field cannot be overemphasized.

You are right when U said there is no intensive research in this country becos the Govt. has not encouraged it enough.

You could read up about Biotechnology on the internet, that is research! You have to be curious and ready to learn. I'm currrently doing my NYSC in a Biotech Advanced Lab in Abj and I 'm working so hard so that I can be retained. You wont believe that I saw some of the some of the equipments we were taught in school for the first time here in the lab and they are all functioning.

Everybody that has come on to this thread to lament their misfortune at studying chemistry or biochemistry.
They should leave lamentation for bible, and get busy living life. Lots of things that one can do in life.

It apears like I see tins differently about ds courses o. As a biochemist I found myself fiting into any manufacturing company. I also fit into O&G, hospitals, research institutes&labs. Infact, der r numerous oportunitys 4 chemists dan u guys tink o. I did my IT in a botling coy(QC),NYSC in a soap coy and presently going to work with a Food coy. Whatelse do you guys want o.We have uncountable manufacturing coys in Nig,Lagos esp, and all of dem needs our service as analyst. I see prospects here eventhough I am NIM&HSEcertified. All d best 2u all!

For all pure and applied chemists, diversification into public health and HSE sectors seems the most lucrative, since research scientists are not appreciated in Nigeria.

@vic..- if der's one tin I enjoyd doing durin nysc, l'l tell u its NIM. Diff Pple av diff opnion dependn on seriousness in ur centre, who u ar,ur comitment & wot u want.
Som corpers don't atend lectures at all n won't even prepare, all dy want is write xam n get certfcate. Mine was diff, even if I neva pasd d exam I gained alot dat cld enhance my skills in my chosen career. All I wanted was somtin dat cld enlighten & boost my knwledge/CV on mgt since I don't av such bakground. I'm glad I got dat in NIM. Due 2d alarming competition in d labor mkt,I'v decided 2 upgrade myself 2 fiting any dept. I'v aplyd 4 sales, managerial positions&quality control. In an interview last wk,d interviewer was impressed@my response and askd if I cld work in d sales dept cos of certain skills he saw?I laughd n told him Iv only developd mysef 2 sooth any positn available but I'l prefer a place in d lab wch is d basis of d interview.
To be a boss in any dept;lab, production, sales,HOUR etc I think d first skill is managerial skills whch NIM can offer. D corporate law course enlightens you on legal tins u need to knw, 2 incorporate ur own biz n wot ur statutory rights are in ur organizatn. Infact, der's a lot 2 gain..u v idea of financial mgt, corporate governance, stocklisting, types of companys u can incorporate, mgt principles, comunicatn, biz ethics..etc.
Surprisingly, many of d so called mgt grad8s who badmouthed NIM as notin cos of there familiarity stil end up trying to cheat in xam or failing outrightly. Thnk God my centre didn't giv room 4 cheating, evryone 'OYO'.
Amazingly,I see lot of vacancys dt state specificaly dt u must b NIM certified 2 apply.
Note- u must b sure ua ready 2 read 4 it 2 register o,as e no too dey easy o!its 8 courses in like 2 semesters..o madt small o!

Bros, I hail you.
I've B.Sc in Applied Chemistry and M.SC in Analytical Chemistry, but all the Chemistry are lying fallow in my brain.
Sadly,I've never earned a dime from my knowledge of Chemistry.
You mentioned going for courses and trainings on instrumentation, please do you know anywhere one can get such?.
I'm almost forced to regret towing this line.
Please respond soon.
