The protest against removal of fuel subsidy in Ekiti State took another dimension as Catholic Bishop of Ekiti, Most Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, yesterday led labour leaders, students and others in Ado Ekiti to condemn the removal of oil subsidy.

The Bishop, who dressed in his cassock joined other protesters from Ajilosun area of Ado Ekiti, marched through the popular old garage in Ijigbo and stopped at Fajuyi Park, where the leaders of the various groups addressed the people.

Condemning President Goodluck Jonathan’s action on the oil subsidy removal, he asked why the president could not act swiftly on the security problem to find a lasting solution to the bombing going on in the North, but could be zealous in adding to people’s suffering on January 1.

He asked, for almost a year after promising to pay N18, 000 minimum wage to workers, the President was yet to fulfill his promise, instead, he is creating another ways to make the low income earners to face more hardship.
The protesters made bonfires in Odo-Ado and Adebayo areas of the state capital and blocked major roads, despite the order of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim that such acts would not be tolerated.
Through the placards the protesters said: “Jonathan, enough of bad luck”; “N65 Per Litre is all We Want among others.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, who rolled out several Police Vans and three Armoured Personnel Carriers to convey policemen to man strategic places to prevent breakdown of law and order, personally coordinated security personnel that patrolled the streets.

The Iyaloja of Ekiti State, Chief Mrs. Aduke Seriki said the market women were solidly in support of the protest against the removal, saying food prices have been increasing since the president removed the subsidy.
The Chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, Ayodeji Aluko and Kolawole Olaiya were the conveners of the protest.
The protesters called the President several names saying he has turned his good luck to bad luck, saying enough is enough.
