Nigerian Labor Minister Says Protesters Are Hoodlums – Premium Times

* January 4, 2012 11:33 PM
* no comments

The Labor Minister, Emeka Wogu, has dismissed Nigerians protesting the removal of subsidy on petrol, describing them as “hoodlums.”

The minister made the claims at a press conference where he tried to defend government’s decision to remove subsidy on petroleum products. The minister said most of the protesters are ignoramuses being pushed around by a few bent on undermine the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“What is happening is instigation by some people to get some people into the streets to protest over a government policy,” the minister said. “Most of the people who have gotten into the street do not even know why they are hitting the streets.”

The protests started on January 2 in Abuja where hundreds of protesters signed a petition calling for a rollback of the policy. The protest quickly spread across major cities in Nigeria the following day.

Roads in Lokoja, a link town between Abuja and the southern part of Nigeria were blocked by hundreds of protesters causing serious vehicular traffic and slowing access to Abuja.

“Lokoja was an issue of hoodlums streaming into the highway and blocking the road, smashing the windscreen of every vehicle bearing government numbers,” the minister said. “It was bedlam.”

The minister’s comments underlines government’s resolve to employ force to quell protests and ensure the policy is accepted by Nigerians. Unlike other climes, where protesters are controlled with rubber bullets, the Nigeria government use both military and civil force, armed with live ammunitions to checkmate protesters.

The first protest in Abuja was greeted with massive deployment of soldiers and mobile police officers all armed to the teeth. Twelve protesters were arrested and released the following day.

Muyideen Mustafa, one of the two killed when police fired live bullets at a crowd of protesters in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday was buried this evening.

Hundreds of protesters have been reportedly brutalized and detained by the police across Nigeria.

Disgraceful and arrogant that Wogu calls protestors "hoodlums". Reminds me of How the Deputy Senate President unthinkingly labelled Rev. Ugolor and other PIB prootestors "Charlatans" a while back merely because those folks dared to ask the NASS to do its job and pass the PIB.

Who is the real charlatan now considering Ekweremadu, Mark et al have not supervised the delivery of the PIB so far almost a Year after the deputy senate President's uncouth insult? All these empty barrel leaders sef. They are paid so much yet deliver nada. All they enjoy doing is insulting Nigerians.

PIB: Protesters call for resignation of Ekweremadu
On March 10, 2011 · In News

BY INALEGWU SHAIBU
ABUJA – A coalition of civil society for PIB campaign yesterday called on Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to resign for calling those protesting the delay in the passage of Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, charlatans.

Coordinator of the group, Rev. David Ugolor, who spoke to newsmen yesterday, said it was shameful and disgraceful for the deputy senate president to call peaceful protesters who are working for the growth of Nigeria charlatans.

He said: “For the deputy senate president to call civil society groups that came here on Monday to protest why the PIB has not been passed since the Joint Committee on PIB submitted its report to the Senate, without any violence as charlatans is very disgraceful.

“Sen Ekeremadu is not the type of leader we need in this country. The deputy senate president should, therefore, resign for making such statement.

“Do they want what happened in Niger Delta before to happen again? Can Sen Ekweremadu refer to ex-militant as charlatans? A man of his calibre should not call protesters charlatans.

Rev. Ugolor noted that the deputy senate president should have taken advantage of his office to make history by passing the bill, instead of involving in frivolities and name calling.

According to him, “with that comment, do you think somebody like Sen Ekweremadu should be in that position?

“He had the opportunity of making history with the privilege of chairing the Senate in the absence of the Senate President and all he could do was to call peaceful protesters charlatans, we resist any effort to frustrate the passage of the bill because its passage will benefit Nigerians.”

The group also demanded an apology from the deputy senate president, insisting that it was impolite for a Senator of Ekweremadu’s status to ascribe such abusive word to Nigerians who are seeking the benefits of the larger society through peaceful protests.

Rev. Ugolor added that the civil societies is committed to better Nigeria, stressing that no amount of verbal harassment will deter them from mounting protest to ensure that the PIB is passed into law.

D President is d top honcho, he has many of his men managing several parts of govt, but d buck stops at his table. Right now d following officers are a big baggage on his govt's credibility and he needs to get rid of them ASAP:

1. IG of Police - No clue to curbing terrorism amongst other crimes, then they let a prime suspect escape after being caught. If u remember that it was d extra-judicial killing of Muhammed Yusuf by d police that escalated this menace, then Ringim deserves a jail term plus his retirement.

2. Petroleum Minister- D one-day-one-scandal minister, d revelations from d subsidy probe is damning, and daily reports of bribes and graft under her watch is mind boggling. She needs to step back to let d law enforcement do their job, she is a suspect in all these scams and she can't be d judge and advocate as well. I know say my South South brothers go say "na our turn". Make una find somebody better, d Shell we she dey take claim as pedigree, many of her colleagues in Shell don't speak highly of her and are not surprised at d turn of things. She actually is one of d ministers that give d impression that GEJ has no control of his govt.

3. D Entire top management of NNPC- Barring Reginald Stanley, who is doing a Herculean job trying to clean d stinking tables in PPPRA.

4. D Minister of Information and President's entire media team: no be rocket science, u cannot handle media for someone and watch his approval rating dip so low in such a short period and u are still in a job. D fuel subsidy debacle was a media failure.

5. D Attorney General : Too many questionable financial transactions dogs this one, reliably a few questionable bank accounts have been traced to him.

THESE TWO SHOULD BE ON PROBATION

1. D National Security Adviser: this sharp looking bros, does not seem to have a grip on his job. We will take it that terrorism is a new dimension of challenge for Nigerian law enforcement, but brothers and sisters, if d man no sabi make he go abeg.

2. Finance: Madam needs to decide whether she is working for d Nigerian people or d IMF. She has forced d IMF's bitter and likely to be ineffective pill of subsidy removal on us, let's REMEMBER, she was d same person that tricked us into paying $40billion to d IMF a few years back promising investment and infrastructure we never got.

OUR DEAR OGA, WE KNOW SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE UR PERSON PERSONS, BUT NA UR NAME HISTORY GO WRITE NO BE THEM, REMOVE D ONES WEY U NEED O REMOVE BEFORE DEM FALL UR HAND.

Wogu is lack-lustre and uninspiring. The National Assembly is slow, clay-footed and over-feeding while delivering next-to-nothing.

The real hoodlums and charlatans are in government and Nigerians have the misfortune to be paying the price. Worse still, they have the temerity and audacity to turn round and label those paying the expensive bill as charlatans. Sad.
