Fresh facts have revealed that the escape of suspected mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madala, Kabir Sokoto, was facilitated by Police Commissioner, Zakari Biu, with veiled backing from close allies of the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim.

Competent Police sources at the Force Headquarters told Pointblanknews.com that a recently promoted Commissioner of Police (CP) Biu in charge of Investigations at the Zone 7 Police Command in Wuse Abuja facilitated the escape of Kabir Sokoto.

CP Biu, is from Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, which serves as the Headquarters of the Islamic sect.

The source hinted that Biu had ordered two of his men who are of the ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) who are detailed to be in charge of the suspect to produce him for personal interrogation.

Pointblanknews.com gathered that CP Biu after the “personal interrogation” asked his aide to take the suspect for evening prayers within the premises of his office.

According to our source the whole the tale about how the team taking Sokoto to Abaji was ambushed by those loyal to the suspect was all a smokes screen.

Pointblanknews.com further learnt that, the police collaborators and their sponsors felt, to allow Sokoto face prosecution was a risk to huge, as he may be forced to reveal names of those behind the sect within the top echelon of the police.

"After the prayers, the CP's Aide came back to the office alone and after we were called to account for the suspect", the source revealed.

But Police authorities had in a swift response issued a release that the CP Biu has been suspended immediately from office.

According to the release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel O. Amore said the Inspector General of Police Hafiz Ringim has approve the immediate suspension of the CP.

"The Nigeria Police Force wishes to confirm that a suspect was arrested in a successful Police operation and was rescued from a team of Policemen detailed to carry out further investigation in the matter.

"The suspect was handed over to a Commissioner of Police for further investigation and he consequently detailed his men to take the suspect to Abaji in furtherance of investigation. In the course of undertaking this important procedure, the Policemen on escorts with the suspect were attacked by the suspected sect gang members and in the process the suspect freed.

"The Police view this development as a serious negligence on the part of the Commissioner of Police and have since been queried and suspended from duty. If a criminal case is established against him and his team, they will be prosecuted", DCP Amore said.
It was also learnt that the Commissioner had been under pressure from some top officials since the arrest of Mallam Sokoto on Saturday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leading to the controversy over where he was arrested and the agency in charge of his case.

A section of the media had reported that the suspect was arrested at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja while a senior police officer had confirmed to our correspondent that he was arrested in Abaji, a suburb of the FCT during a joint agency operation.

It was also learnt that the pressure over the suspect might not be unconnected with the alleged involvement of two sons of a prominent Northern traditional ruler in the Madalla bombing.

According to our source, who prefers be anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the story, the suspect’s escape might have been stage-managed by the police as he was said to have been taken back to Abaji as part of the investigation where he was said to have been rescued by some militant youths who had laid siege in the palace.

The suspect, who is also known to be an arms dealer, was reportedly tracked down by the security forces and investigation had linked him to the sons of the traditional ruler who is said to enjoy political patronage from people in the corridors of power.

Sokoto was arrested with serving military personnel at the nation’s capital after several weeks of investigation.
